Follow up eye exams

For moms with toddler and older preemies- how long did you have follow up eye exams?

I know that we had a couple in the first months home, and then another one at 1 year old. I thought we were done with them (never any problems found). But I just got a postcard from the pediatric opthamalogist about having a 2 year exam. So I called the office to find out what it was for, and she said it was just a regular eye exam at this point. I guess I'm skeptical about how useful this would be, as we have not had eye issues, and the pediatrician would do a basic exam, right? On the one hand I feel stupid for even questioning a medical exam, as we've done all the recommended ones, but on the other hand, I just don't feel this one is necessary. Would you have it done?

  • My boys had several in the NICU, one right after coming home, and one a 6m adjusted. They were cleared to not return until school age or we notice problems.

  • DD only had two follow up appts.  I got a postcard to call and make a 2 year appt.  I asked pedi about it and he said not to worry about it and we would follow up if she was having any issues.  DD never had ROP.
  • We had follow ups at 6 months and a year.  At the last one the eye Dr said he wanted to see him again in another year.  I asked why since DS never had ROP and the Dr hadn't mentioned seeing any problems at either of his appointments. The Dr said he likes to see preemies back since they are at higher risk of developing vision problems.

My daughter had ROP (Stage 1)  and had visits at the ROP clinic after she was discharged from the NICU every 3 weeks 3 times.  Then, we had a follow-up 4 months after the last ROP clinic visit with a local pediatric opthamologist.  She said that unless the pedi or anyone else notices any problems, she didn't need to come back.

  • We had one at 20 months but only because we never had once since right after they came home from the NICU and the opthamologist said the retinas were mature and clear of ROP.  I had talked with other preemie moms and they all had follow ups at 6 months or a year when we did not.  So I decided we better check just in case.  Turns out their eyes are still looking good and he didn't recommend us come back any time soon.

Thanks for your experiences! I think we'll hold off on it for now, and see if her pedi agrees at her 2 year appointment.
