Officially SAHM now

I'm from Canada so I got a year of mat leave which is now officially done. My work called and asked me to officially resign if I am not returning and I just sent in my resignation. I worked in a call centre for slightly more than minimum wage and would make less than $20 a day after daycare and taxes... No thanks!

im very happy to be staying home and raising my daughter but I don't love how tight the budget is. Any suggestions on how to save money on a tight budget?

  • Yay congrats! I've been a sahm for almost two years although I guess now I do work 2 days a week as a gardener. I save lots of money by couponing. By lots I mean 100 a week! Go to thekrazycouponlady.com and read her page for beginners.

  • Kind of jealous of you right now. I wish I could stay home, but I also love my job. I just negotiated more pay to make it worth my time, but once we have 2 I'll be a SAHM for sure because daycare for 2 is NOT feasible on our income.

Anyways I've heard good things about this website https://www.frugalmommy.org/members/home

I think it's mainly Ontario though...I'm not sure. I'm on their FB page for my town, they have pages dedicated to other towns. It's great because it's free stuff only. I'm also on the swap and buy page for my town on FB. Check for those in your area if you have FB. I've gotten free clothes, shoes, toys, hats, and great coupon codes from the FB page. I haven't felt the need to use the website yet, and it's a little slow so far since they only recently expanded to a webpage.

I recently got a coupon code that allowed me to print 60 free 4x6 prints from Walmart with a little tweaking and effort, but being that I got it after her birthday party, it was totally worth it.

  • I just recently started staying home with the kids and won't be working for a couple years because I am going back to school in the Fall.  We had to think of ways to save money too.  We only have basic cable instead of the hundreds of cannels that we used to have.  This is saving us around $50 per month.  We eat out less (limiting ourselves to twice a month for dine in restaurants), spend limited amounts of money on snacks during the week or fast food, and started getting groceries at Wal-Mart instead of another more convenient place that costs a little bit more.  Our main savings area was with food.  It's amazing how much you save when you stop eating out as much and keep track of your food spending.

  • Yes, when I calculated how much I would have to make in order to just cover the expense of daycare and commuting costs in my area, it absolutely wasn't worth it.  Especially since I really enjoy being a SAHM.

As far as budget goes, planning meals ahead based on what is on sale at the grocery store that week can help, as well as using coupons. Also, for anything outside of normal groceries, like toys, clothes, etc., make yourself wait a week and then decide if you really need it or not. That works for me to help cut down on impulse buys.

And take advantage of any free baby story times and other activities at your local libraries. Most of the ones around here do not limit access to only residents, so we have 3-4 different libraries to choose from.
