How much is too much?

I still haven't told everybody I am pregnant and I find myself trying to get furniture moved out and around my house to the basement. DH lives out of state until I sell. He was not happy about my moving things. But what choice? Anybody got weight limits? I see the doc Weds. But it needs to be done 4 hours before my appointment.

  • I just wouldn't over do it.  Listen to your body.  Everyone is different so I don't know what to say.  I am not allowed to lift my toddler but I also have a partial placental abruption.

My doctor told me not to lift anything over 20lbs.
And like the pp said, listen to your body.
    Good luck! Hope this helps.

  • I agree with PPs, listen to your body and take lots of breaks. FWIW, I carry two heavy bags to work every day and my doc said that's fine because my body is used to it. His opinion was not to lift or do things that I hadn't already been doing for awhile. Of course I'm sure I'll be more limited as I get closer to the end of second tri and into third.

  • I don't think there is a specific weight that will apply to everyone. It depends on how much work your body is accustomed to.

Like everyone else said, you'll have to listen to your body. Take breaks when you feel tired. Don't do anything that hurts.

Have you had any complications?  If that were the case than pregnant women wouldn't be able to do anything.  You lift more than that grocery shopping.  And what about other children?

  • My doctor has not put any weight lifting restrictions on me yet.  However, I live on a farm and regularly lift 50lb bags of food.  Even so, I would be nervous about moving furniture down the stairs by myself.  I am just clumsy enough that I would probably manage to hurt myself.  Please be careful!  Do you have any friends that could come help for an hour or two?

  • There really is no weight limit unless you've had complication.

Just listen to your body it will let you know when its too much.

I have 3 kids who weigh 40, 30, and 25. I'm constantly lifting them, often the 30 and 25 ones together. But I've been doing this pre pregnancy too so my body is used to it

What kind of furniture are you moving down the stairs into a basement by yourself? Moving furniture down a set of stairs is hard for two people to do.

Personally, I probably wouldn't do it. But if you have no choice, I'd go very, very slow.

Why didn't DH hire movers for you? They're really not that expensive considering you are pregnant and don't want to take any risks.

    Really?

I have moved every single time I have been pregnant, except this time but I assume its coming. I also just recently rearranged bedrooms which involved lifting furniture and carrying it to new rooms.

  • I have to lift at work sometimes, and my doctor told me to listen to by body. If I start having any cramping that's my body's way of saying 'cut it out.' I'm sure boxes are ok at this point, I wouldn't recommend trying to play superman with a sofa.
  • IME DH is right to worry.  I had my placenta partially tear away while moving stuff during one pregnancy. Lesson learned there. I'm sure people do it all the time with no ill effects but to me it is not worth the risk.

If you REALLY don't want to tell someone about the pregnancy I'd make up any excuse to need help.

Nope! No complications! I mistyped though she said over 25. This is my first. I think she was talking about free weights at the gym.
  • Remember as your belly grows your center of gravity will change. I was moving a baby swing down the stairs at almost 5 months and fell down them, ended up needing to relax after that because it started contractions. It's not worth it. Have someone else do it for you.

my OB told me this during my twin pregnancy, and I worked with pre-schoolers, and could lift up to 25lbs still at 30+ weeks.  This pregnancy she said the same principle applies--I can lift the weights I have already been lifting--not more.  Though, I will say, my 40+ lbs toddler is definitely getting too heavy for me to lift, and my 35lb toddler is starting to put strain if I carry him from the car, to our door on the 2nd floor of our home--so, I'm realizing I will need to start cutting back on when/how I lift/carry things already.

God gave me a double portion for my inheritance with my little Mighty men :) 9/19/10 Baby A born at 1:47 am 6lbs 14oz, 20.5inches long. Baby B born at 3:20 am 6lbs 6oz, 19.5inches long. My double blessing!:)
