DD, that hurts...

DD has started this new thing while nursing. She'll eat fine on the right side, but on the left side she'll nurse for a bit, but then pull away with the nipple still in her mouth - it HURTS! She'll do it several times, but just on the left side. Any ideas of how to make it stop? I'll sternly say "no," but she just smiles lol.

  • Yup, we go through this, too. I think he does it when he's really not hungry anymore.

  • I wish I knew how to stop it. DD does it a lot now bc she knows something is going on around here. Even when there's NOTHING going on. I say " Alivia please don't do that you're hurting mommy". Yeah maybe someday she'll get it

  • Maybe just set her down in a safe place and take a break from nursing? She may be upset, but hopefully she will make the association that if she does that, she can't nurse.

  • Does she ever end up actually eating from the other side? If not, I'd do one warning and then stop the session. It may help if she wanted to actually nurse, and it won't bother her if she is just done and playing. It does hurt bad, DD2 did that in her sleep one time and my nipple hurt for a week.

  • DD does this too and it does hurt like hell. I notice she does it most when shes distracted like DH walking behind the couch. I try to nurse in a quiet environment with less distractions. That might help you if its because of distractions. And I have pretty much given up with a nursing cover because she thinks its a game of peekaboo and will keep hitting the cover up.

  • DS2 does this too, and actually just started biting this last week which REALLY hurts especially since his two lower teeth are in. I have no idea how to stop it. My first DS only bit me twice before he got that it was not ok (probably because I yelped and startled him) so I am not sure what I am doing wrong with DS2 but my poor nipples are really getting raw.

  • I've been taught to push them into the breast - it covers their nose for a second and they let go to take a breath without hurting you more - and you say "no biting". It's worked for my biters within a few times.
