I know someone posted about her book a few months back, but my friend (who is married to an only and knows my plan) sent me this:
https://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/09/opinion/sunday/only-children-lonely-and-selfish.html
Also, here is the book review the Times did:
https://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/09/books/review/one-and-only-by-lauren-sandler.html
I'm excited to read it! All the stuff about mothers and "selfishness," really resonates with me.
Re: NYTimes Article: Only Children - Lonely and Selfish?
Thanks for sharing!
It's strange how the perception was really shaped by a horrible "study" done many, many years ago, that also claimed foreign children were weird. It was propaganda really. So odd how the misconception still perpetuates itself throughout society.
I know a few adults who are only children and yet the most selfish people I know have siblings. Of course!
This goes back to the nature vs. nurture debate. I believe that selfish people are not born, they are made. In today's culture children are so connected (social media, outside activities, etc) that there is no reason to be lonely (mental issues aside).
