Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Making baby food

Does anyone make their own baby food?  I am thinking I would like to but not sure where to start.  What do you use to puree?  What foods did you start with?

Re: Making baby food

  • I was gifted the Baby Bullet food processing system, and like it very much. I bought a sweet potato last week and it made a TON of food for DS. It comes with freezer containers that are very helpful and has a separate blade and container for grains if you want to make your own rice or oatmeal cereal.

  • I use the blender and rice cooker/steamer we already had. You can also bake or boil most things. I only bought Munchkin storage containers.
I started with banana, apples, sweet potato, green beans and carrots.

I use a basket steamer on the stove, and the puree with our blender or an immersion blender. So far we've done sweet potato, squash, carrots, apples, pears, peas. We also mash up bananas and avocado raw. I made some mango and asparagus today, but I'm waiting until the 6 month mark to offer those. It's been really easy!

The site PP mentioned is AWESOME.

  • I haven't started food with DS, but with DD1 I made all my own purees (DD2 refused to eat purees). I used a steamer basket in my pot then put them through my food processor. I started with them fairly thin then quickly thickened them up until she was off purees entirely by 10-11 months.

It was really easy. I spent maybe an hour a week on the entire process, including clean up without a dishwasher.

Certain foods, like sweet potatoes and squash, I just roasted in the oven then mashed up. Really easy!

  • I had a bunch of BRU gift cards to use so I boughy the Baby Brezza, and so far I love it! Its super easy..all I have to do is peel and chop the fruit or vegetable or my choice, stick it in the brezza, and it steams and purees all in one shot. Then I just store in ice cube trays in the freezer.

So far, we've done sweet potatoes, pears, and butternut squash. DS loves trying the new foods, and I take comfort in knowing that I'm not feeding him any chemicals or artificial preservatives..not to mention its way cheaper than buying jarred baby food.

I have a baby breza. I pureed some extra vegetables that were going to go bad. We have not started solids as LO is only 3 and a half months. There is a recipe book inside and it tells what ages they should be served.

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • Great tips! How long do you think it will all last in the freezer?
  • I use a blender... already had it and didn't need to spend extra money. I use icecube trays too.  Love it!  Each cube is 1/2 oz so I can keep track of how much my daughter is eating!  I think it should last a good while.  I always make my own apple sauce for my husband and I and it lasts all year, so I would assume the baby food would last as well.  I started with pears because my baby was constipated and that was recommended to me.  She has also eaten peaches, avocado, sweet potatoes and apples.  I also do my oatmeal in the blender and icecube trays.  I just cook the oatmeal as per the directions on the stove, then I puree it in the blender.  Then I usually serve it with pureed pears or apples.  I didn't do rice due to the arsenic scare.  My daughter isn't eating rice.

Hope this helps!  It's fun and I love knowing what my baby is eating.

  • I do!  It's super easy.  I bought a cheap stainless steel strainer at Walmart and a cheap $10 Black and Decker little food processor.

You cut up any fruit or vegetable into cubes, steam it til it's soft, and then puree.  Then I freeze in BPA free ice cube trays!  Defrost as needed.

You can do any food you want.  I think with DS I started with butternut squash.
