Success after IF

Menopur users, I need tips (XP)

So, I'm starting Menopur Friday. Any tips/advice?

Should I ice the area before injecting? Should I leave the Menopur out for a while to become room temperature? If so how long? Should I massage after, heating pad after?

I may be over thinking this but I'm scared of needles. So I'm looking for any tips to make this go as smoothly as possible.

Also one more question, my RE said to use one amp. Thats a whole vial right? Because they gave me enough for 4 days of 1 vial. Also, how many ml do you use of the saline when mixing? Im assuming 1 ml. These questions I will also ask the nurses, just wondering whats the "norm". TIA!

I didn't use menopur so I can't give advice about the mixing. As far as what to do with shots/pain this is what I did. I also don't like needles but after IVF, I'm over it so no big deal anymore.

DH gave me my shots, I couldn't do it myself. We had a system down that worked really well. He got the shot ready, swabbed the area with an alcohol wipe and pinched the area. When he was set, I took a deep breath in and just before I was done breathing in, I tapped him and he gave me the shot. I exhaled when he was done and pulled the needle out. Doing the shots like this, I didn't feel them go in. I also started doing this during blood work, I watched the person doing the draw and timed my breath as best as I could.

Good luck to you! The first few are nerve wracking but they get easier and then become no biggie.

  • I didn't refrigerate my menopur, but if I were you I would let it get to room temperature. When mixing I drew up 1cc of the saline. For the pain I did not ice, I pinched a little harder so that I caused myself some pain. The thought is your brain will be focused on the pain that it won't notice the shot. Also, when injecting the menopur after the needle is inserted do it slowly, the faster you inject the more it burns. Good luck!

  • My Menopur was always at room temp. The biggest tip I got was to let it sit for about five minutes after mixing. Something about letting it settle really helps the infamous Menopur burn. Massaging and heating pads are more helpful for IM injections so I don't know that they'll help much with a subq injection. Some say ice is helpful, but I only ever iced for Ganirelix since that needle was so dull and painful. The needles for Menopur are nice and thin, but remember to change the needle between mixing and injecting (if that's how you do it, I just used q-caps). You never want to use a needle you used to draw meds to inject. It's already dull from drawing the medication and it will hurt more.

As far as the mixing, definitely talk to your nurse. Between my three Menopur cycles, I was on anywhere from 1/2 vial to 3 vials and the saline amount varied due to halving vials and different mixing instructions.

I've never been afraid of needles, but I was a little icked out at the thought of giving myself injections. However, I ended up giving myself shots in various bathrooms, under restaurant tables, and in my car! It's much easier than it seems and the vast majority of discomfort is psychological. Consider having your SO give you the injection if you feel like it will help to not watch. Also, watch YouTube videos. That really helped me to feel confident.

  • Thanks for all the advice ladies! After reading the responses I checked the package and saw that you all are right and it doesn't need to be refrigerated. They marked it at the pharmacy as it must be refrigerated. I think I will leave it in though and pull each vial out the night before, because its been really hot here lately.

I a going to have DH give them to me. He isn't avail to do the last one so I might have my SIL do it. Or I might be ready at the point to do it myself, we will see.

  • Good luck! I'm going to echo the pinch hard, inject slowly, and don't refrigerate or ice...:)

Im not a huge fan of needles, but I got the hang of it and did all but the IM injections.
