Husband considering taking a new job in a different state

I'm 15 weeks pregnant, and hubby is considering applying for a new job in Texas (we currently live in California). If he does this, our insurance would go away, and he would most likely have a 90-day waiting period before being able to start the new insurance. Have any of you dealt with trying to switch insurance companies while pregnant? We wouldn't qualify for any state programs with income limits, so that's out of the question. The 2 options my husband is considering right now is applying for (and hopefully getting) the job now, moving to Texas and working for the first 90 days, and then I would stay here an continue working until I could get on his insurance, then move out there with him. I'm not thrilled at that idea, but at least I'd have insurance coverage. The other option he's looking at is just waiting to move until after baby is born. I don't like that option, either, though, because we'd still have a lapse in insurance for baby's first 3 months and I know there are a lot of doctor's appointments during that time.

Any advise?

Thanks!

  • Try and make it a stipulation of the new job, explain the situation and often companies will work with you, we do hereI'm in California too, we will give at 30 days but no company contribution until 90 day. Another option if you work and have insurance they will often cover you 30 days after your last day and often longer if you are willing to pay the full premium, some companies in CA also offer cobra, expensive but you can continue coverage.

  • Unfortunately COBRA wouldn't be an option because the current insurance we have is for Kaiser Permanente, which isn't available in Texas. We'll definitely check on the pre-existing condition thing, though.

  • Yes. I have a month while waiting for my husbands new jobs insurance to kick in. We got cobra for the month. It's expensive but better to be safe.

Edit: sorry guess cobra won't help you.

  • Pregnancy, per the affordable health care act, CANNOT, be qualified as a preexisiting condition so long as you've maintained insurance prior to the start up of your new insurance youre good, especially with a group plan. We moved from CA to TX last year, while pregnant and had to go through this EXACT situation. Keep your cobra and when he comes up for insurance in TX, which will likely blue cross blue shield switch over. You may have a little flack but overall they will cover it.

Yeah. 1. Make sure his new insurance will cover the pregnancy and not qualify it as a preexisting condition. 2. Pay for Cobra.

  • Insurance aside,  how do you feel about moving to Texas?

I agree with this. I quit my job that I had insurance with and took a job where insurance wasn't offered. I found out one week before starting my new job that I was pregnant. I tried to get private insurance through blue cross blue shield and was told pregnancy wouldn't be covered through a private policy for one year. So I'd be SOL. I'm having to apply for Medicaid. I will qualify but am having a hard time turning in all the paperwork and jumping through all the hoops. I applied on April 2 and still don't have it yet!! Ugh!!

  • I guess I'll have to look into the COBRA thing more, because I have Kaiser, which isn't offered in TX, so I'm assuming it won't help me to keep my COBRA going. Thank you!

sonrisa - Thanks for asking! I'm actually totally fine with going wherever he wants to go and wherever would make him happy.

As far as him needing to get a new job now, no, he doesn't. He's not happy at his current job, and has been looking into various other options for some time. When he initially brought this to me he said he wanted to wait until the baby is born, but I don't want him to miss an opportunity if it opens up now. Worst case scenario would be that he takes the new job and moves to Texas and I stay here on my job, living with my parents, until his insurance kicks in so there's no gap. Not the most ideal situation, but worth it if he's happy there!

In case anyone else is looking for an answer, it looks like COBRA might be an option afterall based on what I found here -  https://cobrainsurance.com/help/questions/247/Can+I+continue+COBRA+when+I+move+and+my+wife+is+pregnant%3F
