3rd Trimester

Third trimester Ultrasound

hello ladies!

I am trying to remember if I had an ultrasound in the third trimester with my first babe. Does anyone without complications usually get a third trimester ultrasound? Thanks ladies!

Re: Third trimester Ultrasound

  • At most practices, no.  I never had anything past 20 weeks with my kids.

  • At my OB office they do ultrasounds at 8, 20, and 32 weeks for everyone.

  • I think it depends on your doctor.  I'm having one at 29-30 weeks.   Dr says not only is it nice to see the baby,  but it's another way to check the growth and development.  I know I had one with my first as well.  I had a lot of them towards the end, because she was breech.  We were trying to see if she ever turned.  NOPE! Stick out tongue
  • My practice does them in the third trimester, also. I have mine Thursday, at a little over 32 weeks. She referred to it as a "growth ultrasound".
  • My OB does a standard two ultrasounds at 12 and 20 weeks. I had a third around 30 weeks because they said the baby looked small at the second one. I won't have any more unless there are issues.

It really depends on the OB/clinic. Mine only does a 20 a/s unless there are complications or your high risk.
  • My doc just does the 20 week u/s.

In my case- I've had one at 7 weeks (had a miscarriage the first time), 20, 28 (bc of placenta) and now 36 (she is breech).  I think the norm is probably just the anatomy scan but I'm a ftm...so not sure.

Question: since she never turned you had a c-section I'm guessing.  Did you try and have the dr turn her?  Just asking bc I'm in that situation now.  He said we could do an ECV at 37 weeks and I'm trying to decide.  Thanks.

It would be based on your OB. I have had three u/s so far: 13 weeks, 20 weeks, and 31 weeks. I have one coming up in a week at 38 weeks. Nothings wrong. He was measuring in the 75th percentile at 31 weeks and my OB wants to see where he's at now. But that's it
  • I had a 9, 16 (complications), 20 and 34. all were normal except for the 16w one. :)
  • It seems to just be based on what your OB prefers. My OB typically does 1 or 2 during first tri, the 20ish week anatomy scan, and a 36 growth scan to make sure baby is head down, etc.

I had more than I can remember in first tri (probably 4) due to previous miscarriage, then one at 20 weeks and I'm having another at 35 wks to check on everything because I had DD before we could get to the 36 week growth scan. Just different for everyone! I'd suggest asking your doctor at your next appointment.

  • Not at my practice
  • I am having one at 36 weeks (growth ultrasound), but am not sure if that's standard for my practice or if its just because I am high risk this time.
  • I had an early dating ultrasound at 7 weeks, the a/s at 19 weeks, a growth scan at 30 weeks (fundal height was 2-3 weeks ahead), and I just had another growth/position scan today at 36 weeks.   At my practice, women routinely get a 20 week a/s and 36 week scan to check growth and position but I guess I had some additional issues.
  • My OB does one at 20 weeks, and that's it.

I had one at 35 weeks to check on positioning, growth and fluids.

It's standard at my practice to get one at 36 weeks to check how the baby is growing and then another one if you're still pregnant at 40 weeks.
  • Mine does one at 37 weeks. I had an extra one at 35 weeks to check growth.
  • I had an ultrasound at 27 or 28 weeks at the ob/gyn's office, but haven't had one there since.

I did have one at the hospital to check fluid levels when I went in for other symptoms.

He offered the option to try and turn her.  I did not want to attempt it.  There are  a number of things that can go wrong (as well as right).  Also, just because you have the baby turned, it doesn't mean they will stay that way.  There is always a chance they will turn back.  I felt it when my girl tried to turn on her own.  I had NO room left, and it brought me to my knees.  It was soooooooo painful!  I can handle a good deal of pain too.  So....He and I both agreed a c-section was healthiest.   This is how my situation proceeded.  If you really want to have a baby vaginally, I would try to find ways to turn them.  Just know your risks and get all the info.  This way you can be prepared if an emergency happens.

  • Depends on the doctor.

My OB did an ultrasound at 36 weeks to check on the size, placement, etc of the baby.

I'm having an ultrasound at 32 weeks this time.  No idea if this is my last or not...

I have had ultrasounds at 8 weeks, 20 weeks, 32 weeks and I just had another one yesterday at 37 weeks to check fluid levels and size of baby. All were routine, nothing high risk.

  • Thanks ladies I had an appointment this morning and they said no more ultrasounds unless there are issues. some won't get to see my little man again until he's born! unless he's breech. just wondering how do they tell the baby is breech without doing an ultrasound?
