Nursery Opinion- PIP and Clicky

We are going to finish up our nursery this coming Saturday and I can't decide what to do about one part of the room. I'm hoping I can explain with words and pictures and get opinions from you lovely ladies!

In the end the wainscoting will look like this: image

I also want to put up front facing bookshelves using Ikea racks like this: image

Option 1 is putting wainscoting around the whole room and putting the bookshelves up in this corner on the wainscoting. This would make a little reading corner. My worry here is that eventually we'll want to move the bookshelves, then we'll have holes in the wainscoting. image

Option 2 is to stop the wainscoting in the corner (we'd add a finishing piece the corner) and paint this whole wall yellow. So only 3 walls in the room would have wainscoting. Then we'd put the bookshelves up, painted white, and more like the picture shown above.

ETA: Sorry I can't figure out how to get the last 2 pictures so they aren't sideways!

Re: Nursery Opinion- PIP and Clicky

  • I am sorry, this is just my opinion, but I think the book shelves are great and wainscoting is beautiful, but I can't see them going well together. I could be way off base and I admit I am not a creative decorator. I am sure it will probably look better than I think it will.

I voted for option 2 although I was going to suggest stopping right underneath the window then having the panel from the window to the corner all yellow and put the shelves up there.  Then maybe when you take them down to rearrange, you just a have a small part to finish up the room (if you were thinking of doing that in the future).

Oh, that's a nice idea too. Would it look funny to have two different levels of wainscoting though?

I definitely appreciate all opinions. I'm hoping when I paint the bookshelves white, they'll fit in nicely with the room. I also left out that we have a 9 compartment shelf that will have teal fabric bins and wicker bins to match the crib that will add to the whimsical feel of the bookshelves along with the traditional wainscoting. I just never know what will be best, designing is so hard!  :)

  • I think the white shelves on white wainscoting will look cute! I bet you could fill the holes in the wainscoting pretty easily or if it really bugs you just replace the one panel.

  • I chose option 3. Could you do the wainscoting all the way around and just get a corner bookcase?

Good. I did not want to offend you, but like I said I am terrible at decorating. I do not have an eye for it at all. LOL. Designing is stressful for me.

I wonder if they make front facing corner bookshelves. I'll have to look into it. Thanks for the idea!

  • I voted for option 1. I love wainscoting, and I appreciate the look you are trying to go for. I also like the Ikea shelf idea (cheap and accessible for little hands). That being said, I think if you skip a portion of wainscoting to accomodate the shelves it will make the room look disjointed. So, either go with it and fill the holes later (or replace that portion of the wainscoting, as PP suggested) or skip the shelves. It seems out of the two you are more attached to the wainscoting idea, and that will give more definition to the space as a whole. The shelves are a great idea, but I feel you can come up with something else if you need to.

  • I voted for the 3rd option but I know it would drive me crazy to have option 2. I would probably just buy a small book shelf but I would definitely not stop the wainscoting.
  • Do you have the wainscotting already?

If not, what if you just painted the lower portion of the wall a lighter yellow than the top, with a white chair rail around the room to separate it and then put the book shelves wherever you wanted?  It's a more modern look to wainscoting and not as heavy.

I didn't read all the other responses, but could you just do a couple bookshelves right above the wainscotting in a line horizontally, rather than one above the other (vertically).
