Jerk Alert

Lately I have seen a few people on this board sharing pictures or fb statuses talking about how their babies are now in convertible car seats.  Am I missing something? Does that mean you were carrying your giant 11 month old child around in a bucket seat still? I moved Liam around 5 months.  Was that crazy? When we moved him it changed my life and saved my back.   Our of curiousity are any babies still in these seats if so why?

I never ask these questions to be obnoxious I just truly want the answers so I know if I have ruined my child.

Re: Jerk Alert

  • I doubt you've ruined your child.

E is still in the bucket seat in my car.  We just put a convertible in TheBoy's jeep two weeks ago.

In our case, E's a peanut, so it wasn't a major issue and delayed when we had to spend the money.

I'm glad you asked because I was wondering the same thing!

  • We had our LO in there up until a couple of months ago for a couple reasons. She actually still had room to grow with it and it was a really nice one so we wanted to keep going. And also, MH was against getting a convertible seat, I think he thought that meant she was really growing up. Granted, she is, but I was never so thankful for the cat to pee on the old one. Oh darn, can't get the smell out? Yay, convertible car seat!

While I switched Veronica at about 6 months, Nathaniel was just over 10 months when we changed him to his bigger car seat.  He was small and I could easily carry him in the carrier. I could have easily kept him in there longer, but I didn't want to.  Not so easy with Veronica. That could be why.  Some people may have stronger arm muscles or smaller babies.

hahahah in my case I think stronger arm muscles.  I have terrible upper body strength.

  • Bryson is so long that we made the switch around 6 months.  Different babies have different needs!  You definitely didn't ruin Liam; you did what was most practical & convenient for your family. :)

Convertible seats hold babies starting at 5 pounds, and some people choose only a convertible so they don't have to buy 2 seats.  I think the pumpkin seat is just more convenient when they don't have neck control.

Same here.  We are still in the bucket seat but LO is a peanut as well.  We will move her to the convertible seat in the next few weeks.

  • YOU'VE RUINED LIAM'S LYFE ENOUGH MEG. GAWD.

    ugh.

  • We moved Emma at 5 months just because she started scream bloody murder in the infant seat. We switched and she's been a happy camper ever since. I actually debated starting with the convertible and not bothering with an infant seat but I got talked out of it.
  • I go to Kindermusik with a mom who still has her 1 year old in a bucket seat. I almost fell out when the LO fell asleep on the way and mom, who is also pregnant, was struggling carrying the dang thing in. Her LO is in no way a tiny girl. I asked her and she said its just easier and she plans to use it until the new baby arrives.... in September.

  • My guy is still in the carrier car seat. He's a little guy! The carrier holds up to 22lbs in think, so we just figured why spend the money. I'm thinking we are going to change him to the regular car seat around his birthday. I don't carry him in the carrier unless he falls asleep in the car so I basically just use it as a regular car seat anyway.
  • Doubt you ruined him. :) You have to do what makes sense for you - as long as it's legal!

We're still in the infant car seat, but only because LO actually fit into it until recently when she's started protruding, and we're moving shortly and a US certified car seat won't work. We haven't carried her around in it for a while though - she won't be contained.

  • Emily is still in the bucket, but I don't carry it around. It stays in the car. Ours goes to 30lb, so she still has 9 to go before I have to buy a new one and I'm not in any hurry!

  • My SIL still has my niece in the bucket seat and she is 18 months.  She is pretty small and they have a sung ride 30, so she still meets the requirements.  I personally think it looks ridiculous, but that is just me!

  • I was still using a bucket seat w Caleb until 13 mon. He was a peanut and it was a 32lbs or inches max seat. BUTTTT...that sucker just stayed in the car, clicked in the base. No way was I carrying him around.

Hunter is a gigantic baby in comparison and used the same seat. He hated that dayum thing bc he was squashed in it. I put him in the convertible around 4mon

  • My LO is huge and a light sleeper so we've been out of it for a while, but my friend has a kiddo the same age who weighs 18 lbs and who will actually stay asleep through a transfer so she's milking the convenience of the easy transferability of the bucket seat for as long as she can :)

  • Cooper moved seats a week before he turned 10 months. But since I have a monster truck of a rental car since my accident last month I put him back in the bucket. That said, today was the first time I dragged the seat into the store. Coop finally fell asleep and I had hoped he stay sleeping while I got my coffee.

Audrey's still in her infant seat. It goes up to 30 lbs and 30 inches, and she's not there yet, so why not? Plus, it makes me feel better about the $$ we spent on it and the extra bases, since we wont be TTC for at least another year and therefore might not get to use it again.

As for the bolded question, the answer is no...we take her out of it, and the bucket stays in the car, so it's just like a regular carseat. However, occasionally she will fall asleep, and I do LOVE that I can carry her in that way if I choose. Its not that hard, am I just SUPER strong? hehe.

We've already bought one convertible (we'll need 3 total), so we could start using it, but I also figure since she'll be in it forever, the longer we wait, the less worn out and gross they'll get.
