Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Refusing purees now

My daughter is almost nine months old and all of a sudden she refuses to eat anything pureed.  I started making her baby food when she was six months old and has done a really good job at eating it.  As of last week she puts up a fight and now flat out refuses to open her mouth for purees.  She squeezes her eyes closed and puckers her lips like she ate something sour but she does that as soon as I bring the spoon to her mouth.  She will eat all the puffs and cut up pieces of our food that I give her but nothing pureed.

I feel like she's not eating enough because most of the pieces I give her end up stuck in her highchair or on the floor.  I still nurse her between meals and at night but she's so distracted when I feed her and just wants to be on the move.  Has anyone else experienced this?  Should I just stop trying to give her purees and stick to little pieces of our food?

  • Mine went on a pur?e boycott too. I've been giving her small pieces of table food.  She's getting better with her accuracy of actually getting the food in her mouth.  Since I had a lot of puree baby food left, I started freezing it into Popsicle molds and she eats it that way.  And she thinks the Popsicle is fun too!

  • I just came on here to ask about this. DS is about 6.5 months and won't eat his veggie puree at night anymore. He eats the fruit one in the morning at daycare. I was going to ask DCP if she has trouble getting him to eat it. I thought maybe he doesn't like veggies.

I tried giving him banana strips last night but he just mushed them around his tray.

  • LO has started to do the same thing, but only on certain foods. So I give it a couple tries and if he doesn't want it, I give him something I know he'll want. Like pp said, it's just learning before the age of 1. I think he's just learning to figure out what he does and doesn't like.

  • My DS is simply refusing to be spoon-fed, it doesn't matter what's on the spoon.  We started solids just after 4 months (puree), but since then we've done lots of textured foods.  About 2 wks ago I started doing finger foods to let him self-feed.  He's doing pretty good w/that but he doesn't eat as much as when I was spoon-feeding him.  He simply turns his head & clams up his mouth when I go near him w/a spoon, but if I put the foods on his tray, he'll pick them up and eat them.  Problem is, I want to feed him yogurt, oatmeal etc and those he can't self feed...

  • DD did the same thing at 9mo.  Our ped said it was pretty common and to just switch to all table food.  She did great once we switched.  Don't worry how much she actually eats, food is still just a learning experience at this point.

  • Try giving lo a preloaded baby spoon with the pure. We started giving DS a spoon with yogurt on it, and he has a surprisingly good aim. We're following Baby Led Weaning though and just started last week. The BLW book suggested doing this because babies like to control their food intake.
