Glider or Rocking Chair?

Obviously a glider seems to be more comfortable, but I love the idea of finding an old antique rocking chair that my husband can restore and we can keep in our family for generations. A rocking chair would definitely be less expensive as well.

Do you think a rocking chair would be close to as comfortable as a glider? I'm also concerned with space and how much a glider takes up...

Thanks!

Re: Glider or Rocking Chair?

  • I think that the gliding motion is the best, but that's just my personal opinion.  Space wise they are about the same, or at least the one that we want to get.

  • Go try them both out in the store. I had a glider for my first two kids and I loved the ease of the rocking motion and the comfort of all of the cushioning. This time around I bought a rocking chair cause I didn't want to spend too much on my last baby but I am already admitting I made a mistake and need to post it on Craigslist and get another glider instead. You spend so much time in that chair it's insane. Just make sure your back/neck feel supported and there's some sort of cushioning for your arms. Also make sure if you get a rocking chair that it will rock easily if you are placing it on carpet.

And the idea of passing it on through generations is sweet but just remember there's no guarantee the next generations won't want a new glider/rocker of their own instead. So I wouldn't do it primarily for that reason.

Getting a glider isn't an option for us, unless we got one second hand (which I am NOT cool with, since it could have bed bugs or something).  So we bought an old bentwood rocker, and we're nearly finished fixing it up.

I grew up with rocking chairs in my house, and I'm more comfortable on them than gliders.  It's a personal preference, though.  If you're comfortable with either, go for the cheaper option.

  • Glider!!!! The best! So comfy and much nicer motion!

  • Since I was not sure how much time I'll actually spend in the rocker/glider that we are putting in the nursery (no room in our living room or bedroom for another piece of furniture), I went the cheap route for this baby. We got a rocking chair at a garage sale to refinish. If I find I'm in it a lot and will really get a lot of use out of it, then maybe I can justify the money. If not, I'm out $20 and whatever I spend to cover the cushion with fabric. We already have the paint from the dresser DH is refinishing for the nursery.

To me an old antique rocking chair does not sound comfortable for extended sitting.  Unless it has a lot of padding.  We have a Lay-Z-Boy in the nursery and it is fantastic.

  • we got a hand-me-down rocking chair and it was useless for breastfeeding, etc. I'd go with the glider if I were you. You can get a rocker if you want just like for your living room or whatever, but a glider is much more useful for having a newborn.

  • Cushioned gliding vs hard rocking - I'll take cushioned gliding any day! Big Smile
  • I got a BRU rocker/recliner off Craigslist for $50. It is in SPACTACULAR shape, ridiculously comfortable, and I can fully recline and sleep in it if I need to (on those nights we know we will all face). I HATE the look of Gliders, honestly, and I wanted something that would be comfortable but affordable. The only way to know what works for you is to head to a store and test them.

I have both and prefer the glider. If I was able to buy another one, I'd buy a glider that could recline.

  • Thanks for all the advice!! I guess I'll be looking at some gliders this week!
  • IMO, they both are uncomfortable. We have a glider and space wise, its not that bad. I do however love the idea of your husband restoring a rocker and keeping it in the family. I am kind of sentimental like that though.
  • We personally bought a glider that we are refinishing. It's almost completely sanded down and raid for an espresso stain. I also plan to recover the cusions as well. It's very comortable and I would chose that over a plain wooden rocker anyday. However mine I wish reclined.
