Meal planning is hard right now

Mobile: meal planning is hard right now

Ugh. Nothing sounds good to eat and my poor hubby and children have been living off of fast food because I can't figure out what to buy that is still going to sound appetizing to me 6 hours from now, let alone 6 days! Wah.

How are you handling family dinners and food aversions?

Re: Meal planning is hard right now

  • The Chinese delivery man is a common visitor to our house.  And they know us by name at the local pizza place.

But I hear you - I didn't even go grocery shopping for three weeks, so we were living off of whatever could be ordered in or pasta.  I say, do what you can, and if it really gets bad, well, it's summer and your DH can always grill some burgers and hot dogs for the kids.

  • Family dinners are the hardest! My mom has been inviting us over for dinner since we found out about my pregnacy and even then I eat a bit and wrap the rest up for lunch!
  • Ugh, absolutely.  I spent an hour in the grocery store Saturday before I got fed up with EVERYTHING on my list.

DH and I have been eating pizza like we're back in college.  He's a picky eater to begin with, so I have been facing the meal-planning challenge for 4 years now!  Add my aversions to the mix?  If it's not pizza or something he's cooked, it's a "DIY Night" and I'm making grilled cheese (dipped in ketchup!!) and he's having fast-food he picks up on the way home from work.

Hoping 2ndTri is easier on my tummy!  Good luck to you  Smile

I still eat what I plan even if it sounds gross to me at the time.  Once I start eating, I'm usually okay.

  • It's been hard in my house because DH and I are both coaches, so we really like to plan ahead (especially on late nights). Right now I want to just eat on the fly .. whatever sounds good at the moment. It's definitely becoming expensive to eat that way!

Last week we ate pizza 4x. I went food shopping today. I am okay as long as I don't have to handle raw chicken for too long. I got chicken drumsticks so I can just throw them in the oven or I will throw them in slow cooker. I think the slow cooker is a blessing because I only have handle the food for the minimal amount of time and then I can just let it cook all day.

  • I can't do the grocery shopping because everything looks just plain gross to me. I told DH he needs to grocery shop, and just buy whatever he wants (but no chicken, try as I might I can't get poultry down) and I'll try to make do. If I can't eat it, I'll put it in the fridge and try it for lunch and have a yogurt and some fruit instead. One issue is that even though he's a decent cook, he just won't do it. Saturday I knew I'd be at work til 7:30 or later so I told him he was in charge of dinner, thinking he was home all day so could make something, and he got pizza. Not exactly what I should be eating right now...

  • Planning has been super hard for me too, but it's slowly starting to get better. My CSA started back up last week and that has been a huge motivator. Having a fridge/pantry full of fresh organic vegetables that I don't want to waste has really put me in gear. I'm hoping that continues!
  • It's just the two of us. DH loves to cook and is happy to do the grocery shopping. I felt like such an asss for so long because he was always trying so hard to get meals he thought I'd like and I wound up eating pasta or grilled cheese. He's finally accepted it, he'll just cook a meal and keep bland food on hand for me in case it isn't appealing.

I normally love drumsticks and will make them a lot. A couple weeks ago I tried them and they COMPLETELY grossed me out after one bite. Had to get them off my plate. So weird.

  • I haven't planned weekly meals in a few months. Can't stomach the thought of some of the things I used to make. Hoping to get back on track here soon!

Holy cow. Grilled cheese sounds AMAZING!!!!!!!!
  • Same boat as you... Some times I suck it up but most of the time I'm just grossed out, especially by meats... Fruits are still the only thing that are appetizing to me so cooking meals is like torture! Ha

  • I cook what my DH wants and I deal with my own food cravings or not when I feel like it, I sit at the table with DH, even though I may just have a drink.

  • I'm the same way! Seems like I plan something for the week and by the time that day gets here then I can't stand it. We have been doing meal plans more day by day. That helps a lot.

  • Same here.  I didn't go to the grocery store last week but trying to figure out what to to pick up every evening made me more miserable.

I went to the grocery store this weekend and I'll just do what I've done in the past...if I don't want what is planned for that day...I'll cook for DH and DD (cooking doesn't gross me out) and I'll just eat a bowl of cereal and some fruit.

    . That's how I felt !!!!
  • Breakfast has been hard for me so I've been making smoothies. Lunch I can eat almost anything but dinners are hard. I went to Costco and stocked up on food, looked on Pinterest and found recipes ..... Tonight we are having crockpot pineapple chicken.. Never had it but it was super easy and it's 96 degrees here and I don't have to heat up the house.... Crossing my fingers it's good!
  • We have had 'whatever you can find' meals a lot lately. I feel bad for my family, but they have been understanding. When I do cook I usually fix something for them and I usually eat cereal, fruit, or a grilled jelly sandwich.

Well currently DD is eating chicken from one ff place and I'm eating a meal made of things from two others. This was NOT a good day for food.

Ugh but then you have to smell it all day. Could not handle it.
