Outdoor Toys

DS and I have not spent much time outside yet, but now that he is getting more active we both go a little stir crazy, especially in the afternoons. We are currently sectioning off part of our yard to make a play area and keep our two big rambunctious dogs out. The play area is 26' x 29' and I am trying to decide what to put in it. I think one of the blue 10 dollar kiddie pools from Walmart with some bath toys in it would be a good cheap thing. Any reason to get a nicer pool? What else should I get and do you have a specific brand/set that you love? I have thought about one of the small plastic slides, a baby swing, and/or a small playhouse. I don't want this to be too expensive but I also don't want to buy stuff just because it is cheap and have it fall apart or have him outgrow it too fast. Thanks for your thoughts.

  • My LO loves her water table. We got her an inexpensive one for now because all she really does is splash. I figured we could always upgrade when she got older. Also, she loves balls, we have four in our yard of varying sizes. Lastly, I picked up some pin wheel decorations for the yard at the dollar store and she loves those things. She can sit and watch it blow in the wind for awhile.

  • I had a cheap baby pool for the dogs, and from that experience I'd try to find a pool with a drain, not just a plastic bottom. Having to scoop out water then struggle to dump it to clean it out was awful. DD's babytub she never used had a plug for a drain and I thought that was the greatest thing. If I ever get DD a pool it will have a drain.

Also I agree with the slide and water table. DD loves those as well. I also like the water table because it's easy to clean and dump compared to a full pool. Maybe because there are lots of mosquitoes where we live I don't like leaving stagnant water around for them to breed in so a pool I'd have to dump out every day.

  • IMO the slides are really only good for this age my 2.5 year old wont touch one its too small for him, so if you want more than a season I'd skip that. I think the longest used toys have been tonka dump trucks my 9 year old still uses his and Lucas loves it too! Or even a cheaper plastic one. But other than that sand is a big hit and again my oldest still plays in it, and sticks and stones hold all three of their interest longer than any other toy.

    Oh yeah and bubbles

Ditto on the balls. DD loves chasing hers and picking it up to try and throw it. Keeps her entertained for awhile. I also agree with the mini car. DD LOVES hers but you do have to push them.
