Pregnant after a Loss

Lactose intolerance

Anyone become lactose intolerant while pregnant?

I've never been lactose and have always enjoyed dairy products without any issues. Lately, after eating dairy I'm in a lot of pain. Last night,
I woke up with the worst gas type pains of my life...like almost had to go to the hospital because I thought I was in PTL.

Anyway, anyone else suffering from this? Ugh....this is bad!

Re: Lactose intolerance

  • I actually have lactose intolerance while NOT pregnant and it is funny, it goes away while I AM pregnant!

I did have an issue at the end of my pregnancy with DS and was told I could take the Lactaid pills. That was 3 years ago so the rules might have changed but I think it is worth a shot to ask your OB if it is safe for you to take to give you come relief. GL- HTH!

I usually have no problems with dairy products but I since being pregnant I get indigestion like crazy after I consume dairy!nbsp; I have to pop TUMS.nbsp; DH is lactose intolerant and his theory is that maybe babe is too.nbsp; I have know idea if this could anyway shape or form be true tho...

I've popped tums since 2nd tri because of indigestion and HB. However, after eating dairy I'm in pretty excruciating pain. Completely different from indigestion KWIM? So miserable.good theory though...I wonder will this LO will be lactose.

  • Try the fat free dairy products, it could be the fat messing with your digestive system.

Your welcome. And just to spin off of Boots, they now make a Lactaid icecream! I have not tried it but all we drink in our house is Lactose milk. We drink the 2% and it is just like regular milk IMO.

  • Pregnancy does such funny things with lactose intolerance. I'm intolerant when I'm not pregnant, with my first pregnancy it went away, and with this one it's 10x worse! I ate a slice of cheese cake Friday night and paid dearly lol.

ETA: oh and as I write this I'm making homemade ice cream, consequences be damned lol.

  • I'm another one who is opposite!

I'm intermittently lactose intolerant ordinarily. It's the worst the last week and first week of my cycle.

And I can thoroughly enjoy milk and dairy right now! It's fabulous. I can eat ice cream without the threat of being in pain despite taking lactaid!!

  • I am normally LI and have to take lactase enzyme pills or I get bad stomach pain and diarrhea. I used to use Lactaid, but found a brand that you only have to take once or twice a day, called Digestive Advantage.
I'm only 4w3d today, so haven't noticed any changes with it either way yet!

  • I can eat dairy normally, but too much of it makes me ill.  While pregnant, I am completely immune!  I can just eat whatever I want.  I think it's normal for pregnancy to change your food tolerances.  I am sorry you're suffering and would also recommend Lactaid products.  It can't hurt to try them, anyway.

  • I'm severely lactose-intolerant. Even with lactaid, I can only eat small amounts of goat cheese.

If it is lactose intolerance, rather than indigestion, switching to low-fat won't work. High-fat products have less lactose, comparatively (which is why some lactose-intolerant people can do ice cream, but not skim milk).

There are a lot of dairy-free options these days. Soy, coconut, and almond milk work best for baking. Hemp milk does strange things in combination with baking powder. Rice milk works for baking, but not pudding (it won't thicken). Earth balance is the best-tasting dairy-free margarine, bakes well, and doesn't contain hydrogenated fat.

Feel free to pm me if you have any questions or need ideas for cooking/baking.
