Wow!

I've been counting calories since DD was born just to help me stay on track. H and I went out to dinner the last two nights and I can't believe how much eating out throws off your calorie budget. Holy cow! It really makes me want to eat at home all the time now, haha.

  • I sit with the menu in one hand and my phone in the other looking up nutrition info on my phone. I almost ordered a grilled cheese with 1,000 calories. We have been staying in a lot since starting to lose weight. We keep a few Trader Joes frozen pizzas in the freezer as our absolute fallback to avoid cooking.

  • Since we had kids it is hard to go out to restaurants, so that is probably a good thing!! I can cook a very healthy meal at home that tastes as good if not better for much less calories.

  • Eating out can be tough but you can do it and lose/maintain a healthy weight.

    Some tricks - if you MUST get an appetizer or dessert split it.  Avoid potato side dishes - go with a plain steamed vegetable.  Drink a full glass of water as soon as you sit down and in between every alcoholic beverage you drink.  Get sauces/dressings on the side.  I've actually found that salads can be the worst calorie offenders on a lot of menus.  Sometimes, I've even asked the waiter to take away chip bowls at Mexican restaurants and bread bowls at Italian places too because it's so easy to graze on!

  • If I go out to dinner the first thing I'm looking for one the menu is grilled chicken and veggies. I know those are safe for me :) It's thoroughly depressing to look at calories in food.....

  • We really cut back on eating out and take-out when DD was born 4 years ago. I always thought I made healthy food choices, but it's amazing how much I've seen my cholesterol go down too. My weight and exercise routine went back to normal after she was born, so I attribute it completely to that.
