Success after IF

So stressed - WWYD??

So my friend is an OBGYN and put in a beta for me today (8dp5dt) because I've been getting BFNs at home.  I just did it about 1.5 hours ago and it was less than 5 - she said that is considered a definitive negative.  I called the RE's office, and they were adamant that I keep using the meds until next Wednesday.  I feel like that is just the CYA/standard answer.  I basically did it at 8.5dp5dt...why drag it out?  Why not just save the meds and start my period sooner...I know I need to update my siggy, but we have 2 more embryos waiting.

WWYD?  Continue meds anyway?  I hate that my friend is certain it is negative and yet the nurse from the RE is saying it's too early.  Isn't 9dp5dt normal?  I keep finding blogs where someone got a BFP ridiculously late, but I just don't feel like this one is going to turn out that way.  There was not even a squint of a line this morning, and the beta < 5 seems to confirm.  BTW, we are military, this is why I'm having the beta done elsewhere - it's free that way.

Thanks and sorry to be so crazy about this!

Re: So stressed - WWYD??

  • You're basically the equivalent of 13dpo.  I always had my betas done at 14dpo and my RE wanted it to be around 100.  So sadly, I agree that a beta under 5 at 13dpo means this cycle didn't work.  I would stop using the meds and move on.

I'm sorry it wasn't better news.

Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12

Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck.  Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.

I'm sorry you didn't get a better number. I would need to go a little farther myself. Would your friend order another beta on Monday and then you could make a final decision about meds? Sorry, this sucks.

  • I agree that today's result doesn't look good. I am so sorry for that. But I am also a rule follower so if it was me I would listen to the RE and continue my meds until my real beta. Even if you are 99.9% sure it is a BFN, isn't that .1% chance enough to stick it out until Wednesday just to be sure?

  • While I am sorry to say that I agree with PPs that a negative beta at this DPO does not look promising, I would follow the advice of your RE. My RE doesn't even order a beta until the equivalent of 18dpo. Good luck.

  • Thanks for the input!  Today is 9pd5dt...BFN this morning.  We are OOP and I feel like I might as well be throwing meds away.  I did the progesterone last night and the Estrace and I will change my Vivelle patches this morning, but I have to say I just don't know that I can keep doing it if I get another BFN tomorrow morning.  Especially given my 3 successful pregnancies (beyond blessed!), I feel like it's pretty obvious that it's time to move on to another cycle.  Part of me is angry and wondering where my $3600 went... it doesn't seem like I've been given much info...nothing on the embryo other than "Exp. blast" and 2 days before the transfer, they never called with my labs (I asked during the transfer and he said, "If you didn't get a call, they were fine" and that makes me wonder if he even looked at them.)  It really bothers me that the nurse said at 8.5dp5dt a beta would not be accurate since it seems like I've found several references that say otherwise.  I guess I am just frustrated and it doesn't help that my ILs are visiting :)

  • I'm so sorry.  It's hard wanting something so badly and having it slip through your fingers.  Not to mention the financial aspect of it.  And yea, I heard you on the in-law thing.  Mine are in town for the next two weeks and I'm already tired of them!

    Huge hugs.
