Swollen tonsils

So woke up with painful swollen tonsils and chills this morning, could I really have caught a cold in the summer?!! Anyways not sure if I should nurse myself at home with some soup, oj and rest to see if i get better on my own or if I should be going to the doctor ASAP cause of the baby? What do you guys think?

Re: Swollen tonsils

  • Have your SO look at your throat, if you see anything super red or any pockets of puss or if you have a fever in addition to the symptoms you have hightail it to your doctor because it could be strep. Otherwise it's probably just irritation from post nasal drip with a cold and soup, oj and rest. Feel better.

I'm just recovering from strep. Had a sore throat starting last Monday and finally went to the doctor on Thursday when it got severe. Got some antibiotics and by Saturday night I was feeling better. Make sure you don't have a fever. If you don't, I'd give it a day and go to the doctor tomorrow if you're still feeling under the weather.

  • Strep is going around right now, so chances are that's what you're experiencing if you're tonsils are swollen. Try and check for white spots on the back of your throat/tonsils if you're able to. Just call your GP and get an appointment. They'll more than likely just give you a mild antibiotic to fight off the infection. Tylenol for fever and mild discomfort from the swelling, throat lozenges, or doing a warm salt water gargle can all help.

Soup can actually irritate the throat further due to the high sodium content.

Salt also changes the Ph in your saliva which can help to kill the bacteria that is growing. Prevents them from continuing to grow.
