RH negative

so at my last doctors appointment I found out I was RH negative which means I have to get shots in order to prevent my body from creating antibodies that could hurt my little one if our blood was ever mixed. from what I read online it sounds like if our blood mixes then my body looks at the baby as a virus or infection and will...well try and get rid of it...my doctor told me its nothing to worry about but only 15 Americans have this blood type and then I think, we'll how many of that 15 are women and how many of that percentage of woman are baring children? is anyone else RH neg? I'm just scared.

Re: RH negative

  • I think you mean 15%. Its actually fairly common but all it is is a shot to protect both you and baby. The good thing is your doc knows you are RH neg and I personally wouldnt be too worried.

  • I am. It was explained to me that it isn't this pregnancy that causes concern and reasons for the Rhogam shot but subsequent pregnancies. It seems most get the injection at 20-something weeks and after giving birth. I did receive the shot at 6 weeks due to spotting because they weren't sure if the spotting was something normal or my body attacking the embryo.

  • I have two friends who were RH negative, one who just had a healthy little boy in April and one who has a healthy six year old. Your doctor will take care of you!

This and this is why they test pregnant womens' blood type. My mother and my MIL are both RH negative and both had multiple healthy children and were fine themselves because they were tested and recieved the shots. I know it feels like something to worry about but I really think it is not that big of a deal as long as the doctor is aware of the situation. Try not to stress about it.

  • Just got my 28 week Rhogam shot right in the butt. It hurt a bit but it's nothing to worry about as long as your dr. Knows. My mom had to get the shot with all of her children and we all came out fine :)

  • I am RH negative, it's nothing to freak about. This is my third child and I got the shots with my first 2 children. Aside from not liking shots, I have experienced no side effects from them. It's very rare to build up antibodies once you've had the shots from what I understand. You'll be ok, I wouldn't worry about it at all.!

  • I'm RH negative as well, no need to be scared. It was a problem way back when but now with the shot its no big deal. I just had my shot at my last appointment I was 27 weeks and a few days. The doctor have me a card to carry In my wallet just in case I have some sort of bleeding incident and unable to tell emergency workers, which is worst case scenario. After having the babies I will have another shot. I know they say it is rare but my sister is Rh negative and so are 2 of the women I work with, none I them
Have had any problems resulting from it so try not to worry.

  • Just chiming in as another negative gal. I've gotten the shot previously and it was just in the arm, no big deal. I get one at 28 weeks and after birth.

  • I'm negative and I actually get my first shot tomorrow. It's not a problem at all anymore. All you have to do is get the shot at around 28 weeks and another after the birth if your baby has a positive blood type like mine did. I have a healthy 3 year-old and I'm having a relatively normal pregnancy for my second.

  • I'm RH negative and will receive my shot next week at my 28-week appointment. My SIL is also RH negative and said it was NBD this spring when she gave birth to a healthy little boy. I'll have a shot after I have our baby if the baby is RH positive. If your SO is RH negative, too, you won't need the shot because your baby will not be RH positive (according to my doctor). Not many people have their SO tested in order to avoid the shot (it's so routine now that testing another person's blood to avoid a shot seems like extra effort to avoid a routine procedure). It's really nothing to worry about! You're in good company.

I could've written this word-for-word. It's really NBD these days as long as you get the shot.

  • I am rh, but so is DH. Because of this, our LO will be 100 rh, so I have ores not to have the shot.

  • My mother is RH negative. They gave her a shot. She did have complications with me which warranted blood transfusions but I am not sure if it had to do with the blood types.  I'm pretty sure if you get the shot you will be fine.
  • I'm a mother baby nurse. It's very very common to need these shots and is absolutely nothing to worry about as long as you follow your doctor's suggestion. Anybody with a negative blood type gets injections so it's a pretty big chunk of the population. You get another shot at the hospital after you have the baby if your baby turns out to be RH positive and then you don't need any more shots unless you get pregnant again. No biggie.

This article covers the possibility that a child born to two Rh negative parents could be Rh positive. It has to do with the two Rh genes and the sensitivity of the preliminary blood tests. Overall, it just supports that you'll have the shots.
