Say wha?

A friend on FB posted about how her 3yo daughter has an imaginary bff. She said this friend goes every where with them- at the park today, she had to tell a little boy that he had to wait his turn to use the swing Bc the imaginary friend was using it.

Am I the only one that thinks it ridiculous to not let the little boy use the swing?! Everyone was posting about how cute it is that her daughter has an imaginary friend, nothing about making a boy wait until a ficticious kid got off a swing.

Would it bother you if someone told your child he had to wait his turn even if there was no one on the swing? Wwyd if that was your kid?

The logical part of me says I'd probably tell DD that her friend had to share.

This is my thinking too. Or I would make my Ds take turns with the IF instead of making some other poor kid wait...

  • My kids have had imaginary friends. It's cute that her "friend" was using the swing, but real people come first. I wouldn't make an actual kid wait. I'd tell my kid that it was the little boy's turn and her "friend" had to share.

  • I would explain to LO that imaginary friend needs to share with the other kid. Or LO and imaginary friend can take turns.

I must be super hormonal today but this feels annoyingly indulgent and bratty of the parent to allow of the kid.

OK this is how I felt too!  I'm all for imaginary play, Ds and I play pretend games all the time! But "annoyingly indulgent" hit the nail on the head for me when another kid has to wait.

  • Meh, I'd probably give the empty swing a few pushes then tell DD time to let the little boy have a turn.  We all need to learn to wait in life too.  I wouldn't make him wait more than about 3 pushes of the swing though.  Definitely not something to get my fur up about.  If I was the little boy's mom, I'd probably just think it was cute as long as they didn't drag it out too long.

My playground pet peeve is when parents let their kids clog up the slides by lounging at the bottom or climbing up them backwards.  They completely ignore the line of kids waiting to go down and it turns into a giant pile up at the bottom.

I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • Yeah, that's weird.  Sounds like that kid is really good at manipulating her mother.

Having the IF is very cute, but I'd do the same as LaurelBee - make DS take turns with the IF instead of some other kid.

I see this on TB a lot, but IRL I have never seen a "line" of kids waiting to go down a slide. There are usually a few kids on the structure and they spontaneously decide to go down, but it's never that busy that a kid climbing up causes a huge disturbance. They might make one kid wait a sec, but most slides around here have 2 side by side so the kid going down usually just uses the other one. I don't personally care. My kid mastered going up so long ago she doesn't care for the challenge anymore lol. Unless it's wet.

I see it constantly.  But I live in a highly populated area where the playgrounds are always hoppin'.  This usually happens on the twisty slide.

Was the child actually pushing the swing, or just standing to the side while the imaginary friend took a turn?

Because if the child was actually pushing the swing, then technically, I think she was playing with the swing.

If she was just standing on the side, then as her mother I would have told her it was the other child's turn and imaginary friend would have to play with something else.

I think the child was in one swing, and the IF was in another swing, so two swings total being used.

This. Mom was pushing daughter and IF on separate swings, using up 2 swings

  • If a little girl looked at me and said, "No she can't swing there. My imaginary friend is using it.",  I would smile, and say, "Imaginary friend is all done with the swing"  and put my kid in it.
