Adoption

Intro Question

Hi everyone! I'm new to this board and I had a few questions but I wanted to introduce myself.

I recently just had my son and I was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy so I was advised not to have anymore children. My hubby and I discussed adoption for our second child but after some research I know it can take years so we would like to start the process now.

Where should I start? Any tips or resources? We are not interested in fostering first.

Thank you!

Re: Intro Question

  • Welcome!  I would start with the FAQ section of this board (if you haven't already).  Then I would start researching to figure out if you prefer DIA or International (and which country).  You might also want to review your finances to see how much you are able to contribute and then if you aren't able to fully fund your adoption you can decide if you are comfortable fundraising and what path you'd like pursue.

I'm sure the ladies of this board will have some other helpful hints.  I'm a foster mom, so I can't give you any personal advice.  But that seems to be the first steps that people take when pursuing adoption.

  • Ditto the pp.

Also be aware that there are children who are legally free for adoption through the foster care system. That can be an option to explore as well.

    Welcome and GL!

  • Ditto what everyone else has already said, but I would also like to throw in that if you are interested in DIA, depending on your location, your wait may not be as long as you think. I'm guessing from the picture of your LO, who is ADORABLE by the way, that you are a minority family. I know that with the agency we used, there were often very few to no minority couples in the waiting families pool. There is also a very large need in my area to adopt minority babies. My agency actually just sent out a request for any families that might be interested in adopting minority children because there was a large need and not enough families. So just wanted to throw out there that the wait might not be what you are thinking if you are interested in DIA. It could definitely be worth looking into with some agencies in your area!

When you say legally free to adopt what do you mean? I'm going to go read the FAQ section but can you explain?

Thank you! This was actually my thought that because we wanted a minority child the wait may be shorter but I wasn't sure where exactly to start. Thanks for the insight I'm going to contact a local agency.

Legally free means that the child is in foster care and technically an orphan (all parental rights have been terminated).  They are typically living with foster parents until adoptive parents have been identified to be their forever family.

  • Welcome!  Make sure you do plenty of research before you start the process! :)
I'm a dance studio owner, writer, cat mommy, and adventuress who is married to the man of her dreams. My husband and I have had a long-time dream to adopt and it's happening in a way that we didn't quite anticipate. But, like any move of God, it's turning out way better than we expected. We'd love for you to follow our story at www.kirstenkline.com!
