Adoption

2 weeks!

We are leaving to meet our (hopefully) future son in 2 weeks.  Oh my - I am so nervous, excited, etc.

For those of you who have adopted how did your first visit go?  I know he may be scared of us.  He doesn't speak English and can't see - so I'm trying to keep my expectations low.  I'm hoping he'll let us hold him and warm up to us over the weeks that we're there.

Did you feel an instant connection of any kind or did it take a long time to bond with your child?  For those of you who adopted kids older than 1 or 2 did it take a long time for your child to become attached to you?

Re: 2 weeks!

  • We connected in our first trip to meet our ds we were there 3 days. My depth of love has grown much, much more but on some levels I did love him instantly. He got comfortable with us by the third day but I wouldn't call it a true connection or bonding we just figured out his favorite games to play and such.

On our second trip, we connected quicker as we already knew what he liked/didn't like and he recognized our pictures from the album we left with the orphanage director.

On our third/last trip, he definitely remembered us, not just recognized us and he connected quickly. He did not attach and bond completely until 68 weeks after we were gone I'd say. But it happened and we're all very happy!

  • Are any of your kiddos going? I can't tell you how many times I've heard of kids bonding with their new siblings first. And how sweet is it to see your kids playing together?

Eeep! I can't wait! Tell us all about it so I can live vicariously through you pleeeeeeez!

  • No kids coming with us (boo).  I can't wait to see them with him - he's probably going to bond more with them than with us.  But that'll be wonderful to see!
