DD1 went to a birthday party last weekend.

When I picked her up, birthday boy's mom told me she'd slipped in the mud and soiled her undies (she was wearing a skirt, so the undies were the only thing that got dirty), so she'd given her another pair to wear.

Now I don't think there's a right or wrong answer here, but I'm curious to see what you would have done.

Would you have given my DD

a) a pair of birthday boy's underwear - the right size, but, well, BOY underwear

or

b) a pair of birthday boy's big sister's underwear - girl underwear, but 2 sizes too big.

Additionally, would you expect me to keep them or give them back?

(I will tell you what happened once you've all weighed in)

I wouldn't give them back or expect them back.

I would probably do girl undies if they weren't too big.

I would have given her underwear that fit, it's not going to kill her if they are boy underwear. I would probably expect them to be returned at some point.

I would have given her the correct size underwear especially since she was wearing a skirt. I wouldn't want them falling off. I myself would wash them and give them back. Although if I was the one to lend them out I wouldn't expect to get them back.

If the girl underwear would stay on, I do girl but if they looked way too big, I'd go boy

I wouldn't expect them back or anything but I might buy her a replacement pack just as a thank you. This would be ambitious though. I'd probably think about it and never get around to it, especially if we don't see them a lot.

I would offer both. And let the child chose.
I wouldn't expect them back but if they were given to me I would say that I will was them and return them and let the mom say no.

I'd probably have put her in the girl underwear to start, switching to boy underwear if they were just too big and wouldn't stay on.

I would not expect the underwear back.

Thanks for the feedback ladies - I was curious to see what everyone would have done.

I brought them back and put them in the little boy's cubby, but found them back in DD1's cubby the next day. I just figured someone noticed DD's name (I wrote a quick "thank you" and signed her name) and thought the underwear was in the wrong cubby. Never even crossed my mind that they did not want them back. (I did take the hint though when the same thing happened the next day).

Also, it was the 2-sizes-too-big girl underwear. At first I didn't understand why the mom didn't simply give her the boy's underwear in the right size instead. They were definitely too big for her, though not to the point where they were falling off. But then I realized that DD1 is at that age where these things (sadly) start to matter. I'm pretty sure that, given the option (which she may have been - hadn't even thought of that!) she would have gone for the girl ones.

Liam wouldn't ever put on girl underwear. But, every child is different. I have lent out his underwear before and didn't get it back. I didn't expect it back to begin with.

As long as the girl underwear wasn't falling off, I would do the girl underwear.

I would not expect them back.
