October 2011 Moms

Its been awhile.... but I could use some advice on C diff.

A month and a half ago my october lo got really sick with what I thought was a stomache bug, after a week of her only getting worse her doctor ordered a stool sample. Turns out she had c diff, she was put on flagyl and still did not improve. So after finnishing the flagyl she was put on something else and that worked. Well this monday my 4 year old started getting sick with the same symptoms but he also had fever and sore throat. Took him to the doctor yesterday and he has strep and tested postive for c diff. So he was given alimentum (sp) for strep and flagyl for the c diff. Will the alimentum (sp?) make the c diff worse?

  • Sorry, I hear c-diff is really tough.  Once you have c-diff you are more prone to experience it again.  They also say there is a rise of children contactind c-diff from the community.  I hope your LO gets better soon!

  • I know that the strep has to be treated with antibotics but the antibotics is also what can cause c diff. It just seems to me the antibotic will make the c diff worse. He already has it so bad and cant go more then a hour with out pooping on himself. To make it worse he hasnt got to start the flagyl beacuse it has to be ordered. He woke up puking all night last night, so I think it is getting worse. My poor boy just had his tonsils out because he was getting strep every month and now he has it again.

I thought Alimentum was a baby formula. Do you mean amoxicillin? Which is an antibiotic for strep. Antibiotics can make diarrhea worse, they usually say to give extra yogurt or Culturelle to help.

Also adding I was like that with strep all the time and had my tonsils out when I was 10. I still got strep a few times after that which they said can happen because they can't remove ALL of the tonsil tissue. I think I got it twice after surgery but then I never got it again. GL and hope your LOs are better soon.

Sorry I am not sure how to spell it but i know it has a similar spelling. Anyways it is amoxiclin mixed with another antibotic.

Is it augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate)??

Antibiotics can kill off the healthy microbes in your gut, leaving you vulnerable to pathogens (like C. difficile). Nonetheless, I would follow the doc's instructions.

If you have recurring problems with C. diff, I would ask the doc about a fecal transplant. Sounds totally gross, but its scientifically legit and it works much better than antibiotics in most cases.

  • Would a probiotic help or exacerbate the problem? I know when Layla gets sick we get her Kefir (a yogurt smoothie like drink in the health food section of the grocery store) or Culturelle and crush that up in yogurt, however she's always needed probiotics for gas and stomach issues, we used to have her on Biogaia.  I hope they both feel better soon and stay better!

  • My understanding of c. Diff is that it's highly contagious, but its a bacteria everyone has. It flares up when the good bacteria in the gut have even compromised such as with prolonged antibiotic usage.

I'm sorry your dealing with it. I hear it can be a PITA.

I'm not sure a probiotic would make much difference, but its certainly not going to hurt.
