How many words is your LO saying?

Spinning off on Ricola's post.. how many words is your LO saying consistently? Mine is saying 6-7 words. His favorites are ball and dog. What about yours?

Re: How many words is your LO saying?

  • One. It's not her first word but the only word she has said in the last 4 months is ''honey''.
"What are you having?" "Well the radiologist says its a healthy little human baby. I'm a little disappointed, because I really wanted a puppy." LOL

  • 200 easy. My daughter has an alphabet book that has about 10 pictures per letter and she can name every thing in the entire book. She has been using 3 to 4 word sentences for the last couple of months now. She takes after me, I talked really early and never stopped! Lol
  • My husband and I counted this morning. We got to 20. Her 2 word phrases include hi daddy, bye puppies, etc.

  • Ds says about 30...no 2 word sentences though.

  • Wow irritated much? Not bragging, answering a question that was asked. Just because my situation is different mean you have to start something. I actually just switched from baby center to this forum due to the LARGE amount of drama and immature women....thanks for showing me that you are just like them!

  • I would say DS has 20-30 words, however daycare says he only says 2 or 3. I'm not sure whether to worry about the discrepancy more or worry that he's not getting enough one-on-one engaging time at daycare that they just don't pay attention to him saying words. I also feel like maybe we're crazy and make up that sounds he says are words. Whatever, guess there's always something to worry about! I'll be asking at his 18 mo appt and see what the pedi says.

Actually I think we are a very nice drama free board of women who have known each other here for 1 to two years now. If you stick around you will see that. I just think it was kind of insensitive to say that your daughter has 200 plus words when most people are worried their LO only has a few. I'm quite sure your daughter is not the typical 18 month old in the language department, but that is awesome for you.

Nowhere in this post did the original poster say she was concerned about her LO. She merely asked a question and I answered. Done.

If you don't like the answer I am sorry.

My LO isn't saying many words consistently - maybe 5 or 6.  She also repeats a couple phrases sometimes - "all done" after eating and "good girl." She babbles like she's talking, but not with words.  I'm a little worried about her speech development and am looking forward to her 18 month check-up next week.

  • DS isn't saying much.  Dada, Mama, yeah, and an f sound for fan.  Yup! I'm concerned.  DH says he'll start talking when he's ready and he doesn't have to live up to all these guidelines that they have set!  I've tried explaining that the guidelines are milestones.  It's a point of contention in our house!

At the last visit for a re check on DS's ears that Dr. brought it up without me saying anything.  Dr. said he was going to pass on his concerns to DS regular doc.  DS had an eval for speech and gross motor at 15 mo.  They felt he was fine then because he was using some sign language.  So we shall see what happens at his 18mo check up.

  • Until 3 days ago, C only said about 5 words consistently.  Yesterday she said 3 new words, and today she said 4 new words.  I'm hoping the new words combined with her fighting sleep like crazy the last few days mean that she's going through the 18 month "language explosion" that people keep telling me about.

  • DS has two.  I am not overly concerned; I have been here done this already with DD.  DD was diagnosed with an expressive, articulation disorder at 2 and started receiving speech therapy.  Her speech has improved immensely just in the year she has been receiving therapy.

DS is already talking more than DD did at this age.  They both babble(d) non-stop, but DS mimics words once and a while where DD did not.  Plus, there is a family history of late speaking and many of those late speakers are now doctors and engineers.

  • I haven't really counted but I would say at least 3040. Ds1 never had this many words at this point but lo repeats everything ds1 says now. He never shuts up. Most of the time he babbles, but he can clearly say a lot when he wants. He names animals and gives their sounds, asks for snacks like bananas or gummies by name and juice or milk, names toys, and says the basics like hi, bye, mom, dad, names for his grandparents and brother, etc. His only two word phrase is 'quit that' which he says all the time, to everyone for any thing. He's way ahead of where ds1 was at this point! But I should add his words aren't all completely clear yet and some can't be counted bc they are nothing more than a few mingled sounds that I know what they mean but no one else would. I def don't have the brain child with 200 perfect words! Lol

  • DS uses 5-6 consistently, but if you count the ones he has said here and there it's about 12.  I'm starting to worry a little, but I am trying to patiently wait for the "language explosion" to come.
  • She had 12 words at 12 months. I stopped counting then as I have no worries and had an answer for the dr. and health nurse. In the past couple of weeks she has started putting 2 words together in unique conbinations.

My last charge only had a few words @2 and was reading and speaking before he turned 3. They are all so different. He entered kindergarten reading and comprehending at a 8/9 yr old level.

E's had a bit of a language explosion in the last month or so. I have not counted, but I think it's somewhere over 40 words. Whereas She only said about 4-5 words a month ago. She has a couple of 2-3 word phrases like thank you, sit down, here you go, uh oh, oh no, and my personal favorite- love you.

For those whose LOs have not gone through a language explosion, I'm sure it will happen very soon! In E's play group there are a bunch of kids right around her age and there is a huge range in the amount of talking/word count within our group.

jamiam- I agree with mtb, if you would have lurked on our board you would see that we are a close group of mothers who are very supportive of one another. There was a very recent post regarding this talking issue and possible concerns. Your original comment (and subsequent ones) rubbed some of us the wrong way. We enjoy having new moms post on here, but sometimes it's a good idea to lurk for a bit to get a feel for the board and to maybe give an intro. That is awesome that your DD is so advanced in talking.

Oops! It should be that he has 30 TO 40 words. Not 3,040! I figure most of you ladies know the lovely issues with bumping from a phone and the bump gods removing any hyphens and such. But just to be clear! Lol

I have to agree with ccip and mtb. This is by far the most drama free board and the only one I will post on bc of this. To me, this Braggy post is the equivalent of posting 'my child was walking at 5 months' 'my child was potty trained at 12 months' etc. every baby is different and some reach these points quicker. That's awesome. But if we have no idea who you are and you come in with an 'I'm better than you' attitude, you should expect a little kick back. ESP on a tight knit board like this one.

  • DS only has about 3. He says "no" and "hi kitty" which he applies to all animals, not just cats & his sister as well. I'm trying to not be too concerned because I know he understands because he can follow directions. He also babbles all the time, it's just not words yet.
  • My DS says very few words, but babbles all the time and is quite effective at communicating his needs. At his last checkup his pedi was unconcerned. She said that boys often are slower to talk than girls, particularly boys who stay at home with their parent(s) because the parents become used to anticipating their LO's needs and so LO's don't feel the need to use language as quickly. Or something like that. If he doesn't become more verbal by age 2 we'll talk about speech therapy but for now I'm ok with him going at his own pace.

Thats it! I am concerned but hopefully that "explosion"will happen soon.  His 18 month appointment isn't until july 19th (a month late) so hopefully by then!

  • I am truly sorry that some of you think I am bragging, when I am clearly stating my experience with my daughter. My first post on this forum was a question, Which I had some very lovely ladies answer for me! then I moved to the December 2011 birth board and this was the first thread. I read and posted.

If some of you were threatened or irritated by my post, That is your own issue not mine! All I can say is my first experience is similar to that of other forums, Where the mothers can't merely post anything about their child without someone turning it negative!

  • Ok, So if it was clear this was the first post I read and you know nothing about me, Why are you judging me? Why are you saying I'm bragging, when I am stating my situation?

How on earth am I being obnoxious? Since when is telling the truth obnoxious? By assuming you know me and telling me off from your first post, that shows some irritants or insecurity.

If you aren't insecure or threatened then let it go! There was no need for you to point out your issue with my post you could've merely commented on your situation and moved on!

  • Ds says ZERO words. He babbles and points and follows direction but says no real words. I do picture books and alphabet .... but he says nothing. I say wheres the duck and he points to it so on and so forth if i read into it i can worry myself but im just remebering my parents said my brother did the same thing and he is great at everything else so it is probably that just one day he will explode with words
  • He says Mama, Dadda, Boo (for Boomer our dog), More, Ta Da and babbles a lot more but those are the words that he uses the most.

My favorite is Ta Da!  He will do something he thinks is cool or funny and says Ta Da!  So cute!

DD2 has maybe 20 words and a few two word phrases (all done, more please, hi daddy). I have never been one to worry about language development. All kids learn these things at different rates, and, in the grand scheme of things, early speech development means very little.

  • DD is saying 20 to 30 words.  Her favorites are grandma (well, it's really "gama"), ball, uh-oh, mom, dada, please and cat. Lately she's been doing a lot of attempts at repeating new words that we say at home.  It's fun to hear her say new words.  I have friends with babies the same age, and they're all over the spectrum. My best friend told me yesterday that her son who is 2, is saying less words than my daughter.
  • Thousands. In fact, he just finished the last book of Harry Potter series.

    Sorry...I couldn't resist.

Maybe 20 or so. We do flashcards every day, like his daycare does during the school year and he picks up a lot of words from those. He really has exploded in the past month or so. He's a late November baby, so is a little older than many probably.

  • She has about 30.  About 2/3rds of them have come in the last month or so.

  • Hey Mama's!!

I'm a December 2012 mama. Meant to click on that board but clicked this one by accident. My eye fell on the topic and I scrolled through. I also have a 4 year old DS along with my December 2012 baby. All I can say is PLEASE don't worry about the talking thing. I went through this with my 4 year old. I was so worried about his talking. His doctor was worried. At 18 months, he was not speaking at all really. His dad was a late talker so I decided to wait it out. Everyone was recommending speech therapy. I still decided to wait it out. At three, he was only really saying a few things, but mostly echoing. I was really worried. I knew he understood me. Then all of sudden during his third year, he just started talking, and talking and talking. Talking with him is now like having a conversation with a little adult. He just got it one day and never stopped. His dr. is impressed and people always comment on how well he talks. I smile when I think back to how worried I was and how I counted every single word! He just needed some time. These days there is so much to stress you out and make you worried! However some kids just need more time then others. This time around, I will not waste time on this at all with my December 2012 baby. I say this to encourage you to not be worried. Your child will most likely talk in time and then you will not be able to stop them from talking. My DS talks nonstop. I can't even remember what it was like not to hear a word from him. LOL!!
