Cloth Diapering

leaking out the back?

I'm new to CD, with a 15 day old primarily in GMD workhorse  fitteds with Thirsties covers. Every diaper change necessitates a new outfit because his back is soaked with urine. Right now we're changing with most feedings, so every 2 - 3 hours.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? too loose maybe? not changing fast enough?

He also detests getting changed, so the whole thing is getting pretty stressful.

Re: leaking out the back?

  • From all I have read newborns need changed every 2 hours or less. Maybe try changing more frequently? My babies aren't here yet so no personal experience, just what I have read on boards and books. Good luck!

Is the fitted tucked into the cover completely? When I started with covers and prefolds we had some leaks due to wicking because the prefold was slightly exposed above the cover. Now I just make sure it's completely tucked in.

I will pay closer attention to this and see if that's the issue, thanks!

  • Newborns should bechanged much sooner than 2-3 hours. My son is almost 6 months old and we still change every 2 hours except at night. Newborns should be changed every hour to hour and a half. The absorbency of even newborn sposies just will not hold 3 hours worth of newborn pee.

  • Change more frequently. Make sure the diaper is completely tucked into the cover. Is the fitted loose around the waist? If so, you could use a Snappi instead of the snaps to make it tighter. You want the fitted and cover to be tight, but not to the point that it leaves red marks.

  • The other posters said what I was thinking.  I just wanted to say that I know how much it sucks when the baby hates to be changed.  My son used to scream bloody murder!  He is much much much better now and doesn't cry at all.  Hang in there!

Ok, I don't know where I got the idea that I was supposed to change him with every feeding from. Now I feel like an idiot.

ETA - I do change it between feedings if I feel that it's heavy, hear him pooing, etc. If not, I was waiting for feedings.

I definitely don't have enough cloth diapers for this.

That's a typical pattern for disposables...but they hold more because of the chemical composition inside them.

I would aim to change every 90mins in cloth, unless baby is sleeping. Then I would change immediately on waking, then feed, then most likely, change again!

To wash EOD with a NB you'd need to have a minimum of 24 diapers but most people do better with closer to 30.

    HTH.

That does help, thank you! We started with disposables while I recovered from a C-section, so this makes sense. I appreciate the insight!

Don't feel that way.  FWIW I changed at feedings too unless they pooped between.  They were always sleeping so I let them be.  But if you are having leaking problems, then maybe he needs to be changed more often!

  • I only changes DD at feedings too, I found I only got leaks if I didn't have the cover tight enough or if the prefold was sticking out.
  • Are you pointing the penis down?

If it's actually leaking out the top, it can pool around and be wet on the back.

And I never changed more than every 2 hours / with a feed. I just added enough absorbency that it worked.

I do suspect this is a wang in the wrong direction issue, though.

I'm honestly not sure if Iwas paying attention to that before, but after researching yesterday, I definitely am now!

Thanks for the feedback, and sharing your experience!

After reading here that I should be changing every hour to 90 minutes, I had a bit of a white flag moment and went out for disposables. It's good to hear that not everyone changes that often. I'm going tp give myself a break though for a week or so. We're just getting the hang of feedings and being on our own... trying to tackle everything at once was a bit too much for this FTM I guess.

  • Honestly? People that change every hour are doing it wrong. I'm sorry I didn't notice that "helpful" advice sooner, because BS like that is why people quit cloth for good.

If the diapers are still leaking after you double check the fit, point the penis down, and make sure nothing is poking out of the cover, then you need more absorbency - like even doubling up the fitteds you have. No sensible person is changing a newborn every hour.
