Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Pacifier

I have such a love/hate relationship with the pacifier. We have been attempting to keep the paci for sleep times only, but then somehow it creeped into the car as well...

My husband would like to be more lenient than I - he's happy to give it to her more often when she's fussy.

Can anyone share any stories about the pacifier being too much of a problem? Or how it all went when you got rid of it if you had a toddler who loves their paci? Does anyone not mind that their toddler uses the paci?

 Thanks!!!

Re: Pacifier

  • My oldest was a complete paci-holic.  After age 2, we got really strict about only allowing in the bed and car but he HAD to have them then. At 2.5, he bit a hole in it one night and handed it to us.  I gave him another and he bit another hole then said "all done" and went right to sleep.  He never asked for it again after that.  He's teeth are fine and our dentist wasn't worried at all.  I'm not even worried about taking DS2's anytime soon because he's already better than DS1 and only uses it in the bed.

  • At 14 months we went cold turkey. My DD LOVED her paci. She wanted it 24/7. We just decided to do away with it because at that time out of sight was out of mind. There were several rough nights but like everything else we got thru it. We just made sure everyone was on board and removed them from the house

  • We still use the pacifier for night sleep.  At this point, I don't view it as a big deal.

  • With DS1, I took him to the dentist 3 months before he turned 3 and he said I needed to take it from him because it was messing up his teeth. So I told him, when you lose all of your binkys I'm not buying anymore. He kept up with them for a while which was surprising bc he usually lost them quickly. So 2 months later he lost them all. The first night was the worst but it got easier and by day 3, he was pretty much over it. I plan to take DS2s in a couple months.

  • DS loves his paci and is so whiney without it. Right now we're not stressing about it. He mainly has it for sleep times & the car. We'll try to get rid of it by the time he's 2.
