I went to a Talk Tools seminar for DS and found out that straw cups are better for DS kids than sippy cups. (The straw encourages building the tongue muscle b/s you have to pull your tongue back to suck on a staw, while sippy cups promotes tongue thrusting like bottle feeding. (At least that's what I was told.))
So my question is, did you go out and buy the honey bear (where?) or did you just buy one of the sippy cups that have straws to them?
Re: Honey bear
Playtex makes a straw cup that you can squeeze. It's not as easy as the honey bear to squeeze but I found the trick is that you have to keep it really full. If you only put a small amount of liquid it will take both hands and a lot of effort to make the liquid rise.

You could also just practice with juiceboxes. Or a rubbermaid reusable juice box.

However, you can't really see the liquid coming up the straw with those.
WOW!! Just looked at Amazon. So not paying $13 + shipping for a honey bear. Maybe I need to make my own.
We just used the take n toss straw cups. Cheap, but they do leak so its not like a regular sippy that can be tossed around...no valve etc.
Then we moved on to a straw funtainer thermos like this:
