Okay so I've posted here, on the CD and BF boards about this whole situation. I was sick to my stomach about it last night, because I've heard it's awful to get rid of... This morning I'm in "I will attack and destroy this thing" mode! Here is what I'm planning to do... if you've dealt with this before, please feel free to make suggestions/comments, etc.
1) Today when stores open I'm going out to get grapefruit seed extract... I would like to try this before moving on to more drastic measures, since it does help for some (my guess is that it's based on strain of yeast). **Do I need to get tea tree oil as well? I've read in multiple places about using them together, but is it worth giving GSE a shot on it's own? I would be using it on my nipples, baby's bottom, and in the cloth diaper laundry.
2) I'm planning to pick up some disposable diapers from the store as well. **If I'm using GSE on baby's bottom, should I also pick up some Lotrimin AF? Should I use GSE + lotrimin on baby's butt AND my nipples?
3) I've also read up on gentian violet (and someone suggested it in my diaper post here as well). My issues are: staining (we live in a rented apartment with white carpeting, we don't have "old clothes" or sheets which they suggest using (and I don't want to buy extra stuff or have to replace everything since we need money for moving this summer!))... also, with how often it has to be used, daycare would have to help (which I don't think they would handle well, and I'm sure they don't want their stuff all purple either). DH is off Wednesday-Friday this week, so I might try it if other stuff isn't working after 2-3 days (and let him handle it while I'm at work). **How does gentian violet help with yeast rash though? Do you put it right on baby's butt? How can you still be using your CDs without contaminating them or turning them purple?
4) If I clean all the CDs at the beginning, then I can use them with liners without issue, correct? And can use them without liners after 10 days symptom free?
5) Does "symptom free" in baby mean zero diaper rash, and all the white spots in her mouth are completely gone?
6) If I'm not seeing signs of improvement with GSE, I'm planning to ask for a prescription for APNO. I'm guessing LO may have to go to the pedi if the above isn't working - I've read nystatin can be fairly useless, but what else would they give a script for? Or is there something else over the counter we should try first? (Her 6 month checkup is in a week and a half, so I would like to try stuff at home and then ask for something else if we need it during that appointment... darn co-pays.)
7) If you've dealt with this while your LO was in daycare, how did you do it? Does daycare need to be involved with diaper creams, putting drops in their mouths, etc? I'm worried that this isn't going to go away because she isn't being consistently treated all day long...
If you've read this far, I'm impressed (and thank you)! My head is all over the place, but there are so many things on the internet and it's hard to decide what to do!
Re: My thrush/yeast plan of attack (+ some extra q's)...
'I loved you for a thousand years and I will love you for a thousand more'
I agree with this, why go through all this when you can easily get a script to make it go away. I wouldn't want my baby to go through all the home remedies in hopes that they will work. It's a yeast rash, fungus, so I definitely know that lotrimin in the diaper area does work. My nephew had a yeast rash and that's what the pedi said to use, not sure about the mouth part, but I do know they give drops for it. I would just also strictly use disposable diapers so that way you don't ruin your cloth diapers just until it went away. That's just my honest opinion, hope it goes away quickly and you and baby are feeling better, no matter which remedy you try
I did buy lotrimin this morning, and will be using disposable liners in our CDs (after I clean them)... got some sposies for daycare. Apparently pediatricians often give nystatin drops, and I've read that some of the home remedies (GSE, gentian violet, etc) or often MORE effective than the nystatin. Just because it's "prescription" doesn't necessarily mean it's going to work, which is why I wanted to try some other things first. She isn't feeling badly - eating and sleeping as usual, happy and screeching all day long... if she was showing any signs at all of being sick (other than the white spots on her cheeks) I would definitely take her in.
Good idea, thanks! I was also looking into acidophilus capsules... Is that the same thing?
I think so. Mine says it is lactobacillus acidophilus.
I only have experience with the yeast diaper rash part of this. We did "bathes" aka butt soaks with warm water and baking soda. Dried well -hair dryer on cool or fan then lotrimim and diaper cream. biggest parts to remember change often which was the biggest problem with daycare as they check at least every 2 hours but if little one pooped etc and you din't get to it right away that always made it worse. what is LO eating cause the pH of that make effect pH of urine leading to almost a burn with BM/urine. We had that problem when starting certain solids with our first so far no problems with second.
Other thing to make sure is if using baby wipes rinse/clean off with water. We did spray bottle with water and tshirt wipes (cut up old tshirts) Our pedi actually recommended ditching wipes whenever rashes where bad due to the chemicals. and whatever you do dry well before diaper cream. the whole point of diaper cream is to block moisture. So it baby's butt is wet and you put on cream you've effective trapped moisture at the skin not away from it.
Hope that helps.
Only asking since you didn't mention them in your plan. Granted, you're dealing with those on an almost daily basis.
What about pacifiers and teethers and the toys that are in and out of her mouth regularly?
She isn't eating much besides breast milk. We're doing BLW and she plays with food, but I think she's maybe swallowed like 3 pieces of food in the past 2 weeks. We don't use baby wipes - since we CD, we just use wash cloths and a water bottle. I think the biggest issue with the wetness is making sure daycare takes the time to let her butt dry out...
Thanks for the input!
So...
I boiled EVERYTHING for 20 min this morning - all bottle parts, pump parts, paci's, baby spoons she has used, sippy cups, etc. The plan is to boil everything she uses every night after she goes to bed for the next 2 weeks. I forgot to add that this morning
I accidentally tried to boil the teethers in my madness, not thinking about the fact that they're soft plastic. None of them broke, but they're all mangled shapes now lol
I also had to go back through my freezer stash and throw away over 30oz of milk. I had tears in my eyes doing it...
Ok, so does she actually have a diaper rash or just white patches in her mouth? I can't tell from your post. If it's just patches in the mouth, don't freak out about your diapers.
My DD had thrush a couple months ago all over her tongue, but no sign of yeast in her diapers. To be safe, I put ~20 drops of GSE in each load of laundry I did, including diapers and all other laundry for about a week and a half. I tried mixing it with water and putting it on her tongue, which helped a tiny bit but didn't get rid of the thrush. I ended up getting Nystatin from the pediatrician. I was really trying to go with a natural solution, but the Nystatin worked great and I don't regret it. It's just an antifungal medication that you put in the baby's mouth a couple times a day, really no big deal.
I hate to say it, but you probably didn't have to throw out your milk. I researched it when we were dealing with thrush, and it was one of those things that didn't have a solid answer. If you're worried about the thrush living in your milk you can just scald it and let it cool before you feed your DD. I didn't throw any of my milk out and we have had no problems with thrush flaring up again.
She does have the rash... It's not bad, but it's been there about 3 or 4 days. We started putting lotrimin on it this morning, and I'm almost done bleaching all the diapers... One load to go.
As far as the milk goes, it probably depends on the strain... Bc I found mixed opinions about it too. I donate milk though, and wouldn't want to accidentally send yeast milk to nicu babies... We still have over 250 oz in the freezer. It makes me sad, but really it's okay...
Good for you about donating milk! That's really cool, you're smart to not taking any chances with tainted milk. Good luck, I hope it clears up soon.
We are flying, but DH is driving with the help of his brother and 2 uncles... Between the 4 of them will have a uhaul and 2 cars. We're just putting the milk in a regular cooler. The trip is about 20 hours and they will do it in one day, so we'll put the milk in MIL's deep freezer when they arrive in WI. It should be totally fine, and my LC says that even if it thaws a little, as long as its still at least slushy, it's fine to refreeze.
