Weaning Pain

Has anyone else weaned? I nursed for the last time 3 days ago & I'm pretty sore/sensitive to touch but the strange thing is, I'm not getting engorged but it feels like I am. I've been taking sudafed to help with drying up so maybe that's why. Justd wondering how long before this soreness/pain goes away. Hard to sleep at night. Hurts to hold LO too. :-/

Re: Weaning Pain

  • Did you wean so suddenly? A gradual wean helps fight engorgement and pain. It is also easier for baby. I always suggest a don't offer don't refuse approach to my moms that want to wean.

  • I agree with Whit1. Was it gradual enough. I ep but I stretch out the pumping sessions and slowly cut them down. Now I'm to 1.
Maybe do a 5 min pump to relieve any pressure/milk.

  • Yes I was down to 1 nursing/day. And the last nursing was 2 days after the one before that. I felt like most of the nursing prior to that was comfort nursing because it was always around 4am. The girls are very soft, just really sore. I always thought I had to be engorged to be this sore/tender. It's not excruciating, just highly annoying when trying to sleep or hold LO in my lap.

Any LC will tell you NOT to hand express or pump to relieve the discomfort because then you're essentially telling your body to make more. Supply and demand and all that.

I was going to wean for a few days before I changed my mind and cabbage leaves did wonders. It sounds stupid, but it's something in the leaves. You run a leaf under water and crinkle it in your hand like you're wringing out a washcloth, then just put it on your breast under your bra and leave it there. You can change it out every few hours. Also, wear a tight bra.

Cabbage leaves are good as is peppermint tea, drinking it helps, or you can simply chew on peppermint leaves. Also a tight compression bra helps, so will ice packs.

  • I had 2 really bad days of pain, then it started to go down and away. Just hang in there

  • Are you ladies who are/have weaned switching to formula until 12mo or are you already giving cow's milk?

DD eats 3 meals a day and snacks and juice/water but we still nurse on demand especially in the morning and at night/during the night.

I want to start possibly weaning her but figured it was better to wait until a year then just give cow milk rather than formula?
