Gripe water

Today I bought some gripe water to see if it will help with LO's gas. Should I not give it unless it is recommended by pedi? How often and when should I give it? What brand do you use? I noticed the ingredients in CVS brand were less than the Tummy one. And CVS one had chamomile. What else can you tell me about using gripe water? TIA!!

Re: Gripe water

  • Be careful giving it on a full stomach, especially if they haven't burped enough.  It will all come back up :/   I like the Little Tummies brand with symethicone (sp).  It seems to work better and you don't have to give as much.

  • Got me worried there for a second! I give simethicone gas drops at the same time as gripe water and thought I was double dosing him. I went to check the bottle and the Little Remedies Gripe Water does not have any simethicone in it. The Little Tummies Gas Drops are the ones with the simethicone and doesn't have Gripe Water. They are two different products by the same company.

Just wanted to clarify in case someone else got worried when they read the pp.

  • I swore by it for my son's first few weeks.  I used both Little Tummies and Mommy's Bliss. I tried to only give it when absolutely necessary, but sometimes that still ended up being 4-5 times a day.  I never asked my pedi. DS never got bothered by it.  The box of Mommy's Bliss said to give when needed and no more  than 8 times in a 24hr period.

  • I used Colic Calm without asking the pedi for about the first 6 weeks. It helped quite a lot. I only gave my LO half the recommended dose.

  • I also use Colic Calm and it has helped a lot. We give her like 1/4 of a dose before her bottles at night (when she has the most problem with gas) and it has helped dramatically!

But yes, do not give to them right after a bottle otherwise it will all come up.

  • For gas I think you'll have better luck with gas drops than with gripe water.

The only gripe water I've found to work at all is Colic Calm (google it).

  • I think the Mommy's Bliss Gripe Water is just sugar water, I rinsed the syringe in the water I used to warm the bottles in because it was the middle of the night and I didn't want to wake someone up downstairs with the creaky stairs. Needless to say, when I warmed bottles with that water I used before to rinse the syringe.. I had burnt sugar all in the inside of my bottle warmer..lol.

It did help with hiccups though.

  • We use both Wellements gripe water and gas drops.  Gas drops after a feeding and gripe water either in the bottle or mid-feed.
  • My Pedi, OB, and Midwife all said to avoid gripe water and other similar products until about 8 weeks.
Before then you can usually get rid of the gas with your own food if you're breastfeeding. They suggested burping for longer. Rubbing the tummy in a clockwise motion. And if its still bad to use a probiotic first.
I have 9 week old, and we just started using biogia. So far so good :
