Pregnant after 35

Stupid questions part 1

Hi ladies.  I am usually a lurker on the TTC over 35 board but wanted to come by to ask you ladies a question.  Let me start with a brief background of myself.  I apologize that I am not totally in tune with the abbreviations so I may have to spell some things out.

I am 36 years old and married to the love of my life.  We just got married May 31, 2008 and decided recently to TTC (although I am nervous as hell about being pregnant!).  I stopped taking my birth control pills in early September which means October was my first full month off of the pill.  Sept was a normal period which started on the 8th or 9th as usual.  Oct was the same way.  Nov we went on our delayed honeymoon to Australia and I had my reg period starting Nov 9 but then had "another" period (bleeding that was consistent with a period) about a week later.  Here we are in December.

So, about a week and a half ago I started feeling "funny".  Sorta like butterflies in my belly.  Then, when I was doing crunches at the gym, I started feeling dizzy.  For the last week or so I have felt "ick" kinda like upset belly, a lot of indigestion and feeling faint from time to time.  It progressed and I decided that I would wait to see if I started on the 8th or 9th before I took a test.  Well, those dates have come and gone with absolutely no signs of AF on her way.

Ok, to add to my "symptoms", I have been experiencing some mild cramping (not period like) in my lower abs.  Also feeling some discharge from time to time which makes me think I am starting when, in fact, it is just clear.

Anyway, I took a test this morning (EPT brand - not digital), and it turned out negative.  I think where I am confused is that I seemed to have had two periods in November (the second set of days with blood) so I am not sure which one to go by.  And the fact that I seem to have many of the early pregnancy symptoms (which I know can be contributed to other things as well).  Plus, I am pretty realistic that it couldn't happen THIS fast after being off the pills (right?).  I guess what I am asking you ladies is this - is it possible I may have tested too early?  Has this happened with any of you?  I know the obvious answers are - wait another week and test again (which I will with a digital test), talk to your doctor and we can't see into your uterus (you can tell I have lurked for a while).  I am just trying to get your feedback from your experience.

Thanks in advance!

  • Yep, you need to wait and test again and possibly talk to your dr.  Without charting/temping or using OPKs, it's impossible to know when you ovulated.  And yeah, your body can be pretty screwy after coming off BCP.  I didn't have the quick bleeding like that but the second could've actually been a chemical pg and the first implantation bleeding or something like that.  Impossible to know really.  But it can happen quite quickly so don't discount that.  If you want more info, Taking Charge of Your Fertility is a great book at explaining your cycle and explaining temping.  GL to you and hope you get your BFP soon!

  • I went off the pill and got pregnant at first try.  I tested 2 days before the missed period and had a negative test.  I assumed I wasn't pregnant, but 2 days after my missed period, I felt very dizzy and almost passed out.  I tested that afternoon and got a BFP.  So it's certainly possible to get PG that quickly.

I would think that you?d have a BFP by now (esp if the symptoms you?re having are PG-related), but maybe not, if your period was doing weird things in relation to coming off the pills.  I?d give it a couple of days and test again.  Fingers crossed!

  • Thanks to both of you for your feedback.  It is very much appreciated.  I am just going to enjoy the weekend with my husband and his daughter and try again next week.  I added Part 1 to the subject line because, when and if I ever do get pregnant, I am sure I will be back to bug you!

Thanks again!  And congratulations to both of you!

  • I haven't formally introduced myself around here but have been lurking & occasionally posting for a few weeks.  I'll have to do an intro sometime soon because the longer version is rather humorous.  But it's pretty long...

The short version of my story is that I had 3 Neg tests prior to getting a positive one.  Starting a few days before AF.  I took tests 3-4 days apart.  Just when I had decided I must not be PG I took another test (about 10 days after AF expected) & was surprised to see it was +.  That one was super faint.  The regular ones stayed that way a few days.  I think I took at least 4 more tests after getting a + result though now the memory is a little hazy no it may have been more. BUT the digi one on the day of 1st + pretty much left me with little doubt.  My advice based on my quirky experience is: if in doubt to go ahead & spend a little extra for the digi version.

  • It's hard to say b/c you don't know when you ovulated, so you just have to wait and see. I got negative HPTs 10 and 11 days past ovulation and then a positive at 14 days past, so you never know. I saw some implantation spotting at 12dpo and thought it was AF for sure, but it wasn't!
