Who's actually had GD?

I failed my 1 hour. My number was 161. Not terrible? But not the 1 point I failed it by with dd2.

I talked to the nurse about it today, asked my questions and was done. Called dh to talk to him and he scolded me for not asking about my 'feeling off' that I'd posted about a few days ago. He apparently thinks this is related. While it could be, I most feel th e sickest or the most 'off' when I haven't had enough sugar. If I eat something sweet, I feel better, not great, but better. Wouldn't it be the opposite if I had GD?

I'm not worked up about it, I just am trying to put a finger on the weird way I've been feeling lately!

Insight?

Re: Who's actually had GD?

  • I don't have GD but I have type 1.  All I can say is that diabetes is weird and some of the symptoms of it can be normal pregnancy symptoms (like frequent urination).  When my sugars are running high, I tend to feel more hungry and I also loose weight.  I think scientifically it has something to do with the sugar/energy from food not being deposited into the cells properly.  I'm no doctor but 161 doesn't seem like a great number.  My doc wouldn't be alarmed but doesn't like to see numbers like that frequently.  If it turns out you do have GD, it's a pain but can be managed and you might even start feeling better.  Good luck!

  • Try not to worry about it too much, I failed my one hour with 154 and passed the 3 hour with flying colors.  Good luck!

  • Also, I had to laugh a little. I looked up symptoms to GD: frequent urination, extreme thirst or hunger... Ummm those are kinda things that come alot with being pregnant anyways! Especially second and third tri AND I the summer!

  • I had it with DD #1.  I blew the one-hour out of the water with a 208.  They didn't even bother giving me the 3-hour.  I had no noticeable symptoms with her and when the diabetes educator tested my blood sugar when she showed me how to use the meter I was at a 68 which is low.  Before I started the diet to regulate my sugars, they would shoot through the roof and then drop way low.  All I can tell you is while I didn't feel noticeably bad before the diet, I felt a million times better after I started it.  I had more energy, my weight gain slowed significantly (when my sugars were out of control I gained about 20 pounds in two months, and my 3rd trimester was a breeze).

I just took my one hour for this pregnancy and got a 136 and I have to take the three-hour next week.   If you do end up having it, it isn't the end of everything (though I cried like a baby when I was diagnosed the first time).  You will learn what to eat and when to eat it and how much exercise you have to do to keep it regulated.   Good luck!

  • Got a call today that I failed my 1hr yesterday with a 143 so I am spending tomorrow morning at the lab for the 3hr one... Same thing with my DD 3 yrs ago failed the 1 hr and had no issues with the 3hr one so fingers crossed this next one goes well...

Had the same lesson from my DH today when I told him about it he kept reminding me that the past few days I have been feeling pretty bad, super tired, feeling weak etc.. And according to him all of it makes sense ....

  • I have GD and am diet controlled for this pregnancy.  I also had GD when I had my son and was diet controlled with him as well.

I would think if eating high carb and sugar items makes you feel better...it could be a sign your body is having trouble regulating your blood sugar during pregnancy. I was sort of the same way...I feel a lot better on the diet even though it's a pain. I would just wait till you get your three hour results and go from there...

The high risk board is really a better place if you do have GD...those ladies know tons and are super helpful.
