LGA ultrasound

Yesterday, at 36 w 4 days, I went for a LGA. The report came back that baby was estimated at 9 pounds. My doctor's office called and wants to schedule a c section at 39 weeks, due to size. My husband and I are meeting with the doctor on Monday to review the scan and ask questions. For those BTDT moms, what are some things you would ask? My major concern is the weight being so far off, I could have pushed. Thanks.

Re: LGA ultrasound

  • Growth scans are no always accurate. I would too seek a doctors opinion. Unless you have complications or GDi say no CS. OB have been induction crazy!

Personally, I would laugh and asks if they pull that one on all the new patients.Do you have any other complications that would immediately lead them to go straight for a csection? Here's a pretty good summary of ACOGs opinions on the matter, just to arm yourself with some information. Originally it was written in 2000, but the policies were reaffirmed earlier this year.https://www.aafp.org/afp/2001/0701/p169.html

Thanks! That's how I kinda felt today...like they were pulling one on me. No other complications, and I just can't justify the section based on a guesstimate of size.
  • Sometimes those ultrasounds measurements are accurate but more often than not, they are off. The day I was induced the ultrasound showed I was carrying a baby more than 10 pounds. He was 8 lbs 9 oz. My ob offered me a c section and said that for liability reasons he had to but he had no problem with me trying for a vaginal delivery. He just told me that in the even the ultrasound was accurate and the baby had problems coming out, particularly due to shoulder dystocia, they would need to take measures to make sure that he was safe. I would tell your ob that you want to try for a vaginal delivery. The American college of gynecology even states that estimated weight is not a reason to perform a c section. Even if your baby is 9 lbs, you can still have a normal vaginal delivery.
