C-sections

Anyone else?

Hello! It's my first time over at this board.  Have any of you been in a similar situation? Any advice?

My baby had been measuring in the 95th % my whole pregnancy. I'll be 38 weeks this Friday and he is weighting around 9lb9oz. I know the scans can be 10-15% off in either direction. I was tested 3 times for gestational diabetes but luckily all tests were negative. My husband was a big baby and my sister had two big babies.

Anyway,  today the doctor said because of his size I have 3 options. I can have an induced labor early next week, I can have a scheduled c section in 2weeks or I can wait and see what happens naturally. Of course there are no guarantees with the induction that I won't need a c section. I'm living in Australia and in general c sections are not as common as in the USA.  I asked my doctor what her personal opinion was and she said she personally would have a c section. I'm really unsure as to what do. I want to what is best for baby and I.

Re: Anyone else?

  • I'm personally a "wait and see" gal.  My DS was over 10 lbs (he was ultimately a c/s but not because of his size- they felt I would have been able to deliver him.)  But if you go into labor and baby is not moving down, the c/s will always be an option.  Or baby might come out without a problem.

Did your sister deliver her two babies vaginally?  (Not that her deliveries have anything to do with yours, but just wondering!)

Do what you are most comfortable with- but because of the inaccuracy of growth scans and whatnot, I just personally wouldn't sign up  for major surgery if I didn't need it.

    Good luck!

  • I chose the C-section.

DS measured big from 10 weeks on, so I had a couple of extra growth ultrasounds. At 33w6d, DS's estimated weight via ultrasound was 6 lb. 14 oz.  At 38w4d it was 9 lb. 15 oz.  I met with my OB after that ultrasound.  She told me that I could wait for labor (my body didn't show any signs) to start or I could schedule the c-section.  She wouldn't induce because the abdomen was measuring bigger than the head, and she was afraid that LO would get stuck.  She was willing to let me go into labor on my own because she thought that I would have a better chance of delivering vaginally if my body prepared itself.  I had to be at least 39 weeks to have a c-section.  Based on my OB's schedule, I could have picked 39w2d (Monday), 39w6d (Friday), or a couple of days the following week.  I decided to pick the earlier date.  I had no interest in setting any weight records at the hospital.  DS was 10 lb 6 oz and 22" when he was born, so the ultrasounds were very accurate in my case.

Although I scheduled the c-section at my 38w4d appointment, I did ask my family practitioner (who accepted obstetrics patients until last year) what she would do in my situation.  She said that she would probably opt for the c-section, especially if I didn't go into labor by 40 weeks.  In her words, "An induction with no engagement, no dilation and a big baby is very likely to wind up in a C-section.  It is no fun to spend a long time laboring only to end up with a C-section any way."

My OB said that I was the first patient she had ever encouraged to have a c-section due to the size of the baby.  I don't regret having the c-section.  I had a fairly easy recovery.

  • I was in your situation with my 2nd pregnancy but I also had the benefit of knowing my first was 10 lbs 14 oz when he was born 12 days late by csection and that I never went into labor with him. My own choice this time was to schedule a csection for 39w5d and hope I went into labor naturally. I didn't and had the csection. Number 2 was 9 lbs 10 oz so who knows how big he would have been if he had baked as long as his brother! I know people hate the whole csection for large babies ideology and I agree to an extent but I also agree with my doctor's opinion that induction isn't a good idea if a large baby is suspected either. Good luck!

  • Thanks for sharing ladies. My sister did have two c sections but had abdominal surgery a few years earlier so it was necessary. Her babies measured big and were big.

I shared all my ultrasound reports with my uncle who is a physician's assistant and helped perform c section surgeries and also with my aunt who works as a nurse in the labor ward. Both of them said they would opt for the c section given these results.

The one thing that I know that i don't want is an emergency c section where they knock you out and make your husband leave the room.

I have until Monday to decide...still on the fence but I want to be healthy and have a healthy baby.

I had an emergency csection after pushing for 2 hours. Terrible experience, if I could go back in time I would have scheduled a csection. My hubby was there with me but I was so exhausted and out of it that I couldn't hold my baby arms were shaking etc. I'm pregnant with my second and will definitely schedule a csection this time.
