Insurance and breast pump

Ok. My DH insurance through blue shield just kicked in June 1... We had medi cal for 90 days prior to that while waiting for DH probationary period. I was told that they do provide a pump. I don't even have an ID card yet... Just my group number. Do I just call them with my group number and ask them if I get a pump covered? Is there a certain dept I should be getting in contact with? I'm happy to finally have insurance!!

Re: Insurance and breast pump

  • I just called the main line and gave them my information and she told me where I could pick it up and which one, after baby is born.

  • I just needed my group number and member Id number  for blue cross. I just called member services -definitely couldn't  hurt. My breast pump was covered in full.

Yep. I called and a rep told me an electric double pump was covered, but with our plan, I had to get a prescription from my OB and get the pump through a medical supplier. I went through Edgepark and they handled everything...getting the prescription from my doc, putting everything through insurance and within 6 days of calling Edgepark, the pump was at my door. Super easy!
  • I just called and they told me the places that they considered "in network".  I contacted the place (yummy mummy) and they took care of the rest.  I didn't even have to pay for shipping.  If your insurance lets you use Yummy Mummy I would def do it.  I found them much easier to deal with than a regular medical supply store.

    Good luck!

  • Ladies,

Do most insurance companies cover pumps? I have United I will def. give them a call

  • There was a phone number provided in the benefits booklet that I called. It was a 2 minute phone call & a week later, the breast pump was at my front door! We have Blue Cross Federal, so it might be a bit different than your plan. Either way, they were super helpful & efficient. Look under your Maternity or medical supplies section of your benefits booklet. You might find the info there!

  • Great! This is excellent to know! I am going to call them ASAP

  • I just called my insurance company & they gave me a list of vendors. Then I placed an order from one of the vendors... and got my breast pump in a week!
  • I found the information on my insurance companies website. They had a list of medical suppliers and I picked the one that had the pump I wanted. It was SunMed and the Medela PISA. They emailed me back a form to complete. Other than that they took care of everything and the pump showed up 2 weeks later!
