Knitters - how did you learn

I saw on another post that there are quite a few knitters on the board. I have always wanted to learn, but have no idea where to even start. Where there any easy books that helped you or maybe a video?
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

Re: Knitters - how did you learn

  • I taught myself from a book I picked up at JoAnn Fabric. I think it's called 1-2-3 Knit by Better Homes and Gardens.

There are also TONS of websites with videos (if I had known that, I probably would have started there b/c I find it easier to learn something if someone is showing me.

There is also this great site for patterns, ideas, and any help you could possibly need. www.ravelry.com  you have to sign up (and wait a few days for the invite) but it's free and so much fun! We even have a Nestie group on there.

www.knittinghelp.com is the website that has a ton of help and videos I think.

  • my friend at work showed me how to cast on & knit a basic row. then i went online & figured out some more.

i'm only good at scarves right now- ha! still need to learn hats, gloves & etc.

  • I taught myself from a book years ago, but now you can teach yourself off of the internet.  I'm left handed, so my mom and grandmother said they couldn't teach me.  There are lots of direction on the internet - left and right handed instructions.

  • I took a community ed class. ?I liked the hands on part of it. ?If you do through a book, there are also videos on youtube that show different things as well. ?It is really relaxing and rewarding--I hope you find it to be the same.
  • I learned from a kids book! I think it was the easyist! The kids book came with yarn & needles! I also say some demo's on youtube since I just started knitting again within the last month. I just typed in how to knit in google & found a ton of sites.  I think my needles are like a size 9? I can only make scarfs right now!

  • To be honest, learning from an actual person was the way to go for me. I took an introductory class at my local AC Moore and took it from there. From what I can tell my technique is pretty clunky, but it gets the job done.
  • Hi!

I tried crocheting first and was terrible at that. ?Then, I went to a free class at the library and it was such a big class that it was hard to get questions answered. ?Finally, I took a three day class at a local knitting shop and learned so much! ?It was a group of 4 ladies plus the teacher who was awesome. ?We sat around a table, talking and helping each other figure it out and it was the best place for me to learn.

Have fun, it is a great way to stay busy!
