IUD Experience?

Hi!

Does anyone have experience with IUDs?  I'm looking into that as my form of BC since I can't be trusted to take a pill everyday (I'm a horrible medicine-taker...I never finish antibiotics).  Just wondering how the procedure was to insert it, how you felt with it in, did you have any side effects, etc.?

I don't have any friends that have one so I'm hoping some of you might be able to shed some light on your experience with it.

Thank you!!!

Re: IUD Experience?

  • I'm looking into the copper (non hormonal) IUD so I'm interested to hear the responses!

  • I just got one after the birth of my twin girls. The procedure wasn't too bad, not much worse than a pap smear, just longer. I have delivered 4 kids vaginally, so maybe that made it not as bad? It's only been two weeks but I have been lightly spotting since, which is normal. My periods hadn't started yet after being pregnant. I'm looking forward to the possibility of no periods! So far I'm pleased.

  • I was one of the lucky ones that fall into the "IUD may perforate the wall of your uterus" category on the warning label.  Ouch.  It had to be removed 24 hours after insertion.  Its not common but sucked enough that I will not be trying it again.

  • I had the Mirena for about 2-2.5 years after I had my DD.  I loved it, had no side effects or periods the whole time.

  • I had 2 Mirena's over a 9 yr period before trying to get pregnant and have another one now. I got it 6 wks PP. Had a little cramping during insertion and a little bleeding for 4 wks after. No side affects and no periods otherwise. I LOVE it and won't use anything else unless I would need to.

  • I got the Mirena a few weeks ago and so far, so good. The insertion was a little more painful for me because I had a csection and have never had a vaginal delivery and I hear it is less painful for the latter. However, even with that, it was not a bad experience and I am definitely looking forward to not have to worry about BC. I am 3 weeks out and still spotting, but very very little and not every day. No side effects as of yet.

  • I had the mirena after my 1st son was born and had every side effect listed.  It was fine for about 6 weeks, but after that I kept bleeding, had horrible joint and back pain, gained about 8 pounds, night sweats, couldn't sleep, and was just generally a bit$#!!!

Had it removed and everything returned to normal within a few weeks.

  • I got mirena on Tuesday. The cramping at insertion was more intense than I expected, but nothing compared to contractions haha. I took Motrin and had some light bleeding for about 24 hours and no symptoms since! I am BFing as well. I chose mirena over the paraguard bc I've read that the para guard only thins the uterine lining, which doesn't prevent fertilization, so it can be an abortion of sorts. That didn't sit well with me personally.

  • I had mirena after my first son and loved it. No period until I had it taken out to try for 2. It was out for 4 weeks and I was already pg. Miscarriaged at 6 weeks, then pg again right after that. I got it again at 6 weeks PP this time and no issues.

The only complaint I have is that I can feel the strings like fishing line so I will have them trimmed when it is checked after 6 weeks, which I had to do last time, too.
  • Make sure you take a ton of ibuprofen before your appointment! I got terrible cramps after my insertion with the copper iud, but its well worth the years of protection.
  • I had paragard after DS was born and it was a nightmare. Made my cycles really heavy and nearly 2 weeks long. I'm going with Mirena this time.
