Success after IF

Runny nose

M has been having a runny nose on and off for 2 months now.  He got his first cold when he was 5 months (he's 7 months now).  He had stuffy nose, cough etc at that time.  Since then, it has cleared up completely for a few days, but then he'd have a stuffy nose again. This sort of repeats every week or so.

The stuffy nose/nasal congestion is mostly noticeable in the mornings when he first wake up.  As the day goes on, it's less apparent.  Also, he's been acting totally normal all this time - sleeping well, napping well, eating well.

So my question is, is he keep having minor colds (I do take him to open play several times a week so he's exposed to lots of kids), or is it just something babies do at this age?

Re: Runny nose

  • Our pedi told us to just ignore chest/head congestion and runny nose unless it is accompanied by other signs of illness.  It could be allergies, it could be dust, it could just be baby stuff.  It doesn't sound like anything to worry about if your LO is otherwise acting normally.

ETA:  And DD has this off and on all the time too

  • Thanks!  Glad to know that it's fairly normal.  The thing is, because of his "runny nose" symptoms, we have canceled get-togethers w/our friends (they have a baby 2 months younger than M), for fear that M has a cold and will give it to her.  We are meeting them this Sunday and I don't want to cancel again unless it's necessary.

  • I would say teething. Ds had a runny nose off and on during this period of his life because of teething. Especially if there are no other symptoms.

I hope it stops soon. At least it's easy to wipe at this age.

    This!

Is your a/c on? I notice DD gets stuffy when the weather changes and sometimes with the a/c. She had a runny nose a lot the first year, which I think was her getting used to dust, etc, plus a little allergy stuff, lol. It's annoying, I know, but sounds like things are normal.

As long as LO isn't getting snot all over toys/etc. that other kids can get a hold of, I'd say you're fine being around others. ;)
