Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Swaddle transitions

Hi Everyone, LO is currently 12 weeks, and STTN (7ish, wake up around 5/6 for a feeding then down until 7/730), and does ok with naps as long as I get the timing right with when I put her down.

However, I know she's formed a sleep association with the swaddle (we have to double swaddle this monster).  She only sleeps well swaddled, in her room with blackout curtains. She only sleeps for 30ish minutes in iehter the sling or car seat, and at some point she'll need to be weaned off the swaddle.  She's started rolling tummy to back, and currently rolls back to side. She seems determined to roll, and I know we'll need to stop once she rolls back to tummy.

For those who transitioned LO from swaddle to not, what did you guys do? I've tried one arm out, and she hits herself (NEAT) and can't fall asleep.  I've tried legs out, and it wakes her up with her little legs boinking around.  I'm getting the Merlin Sleep Suit, to see if maybe we should try that for naps for a little....

  • We went cold turkey.  DS did surprisingly well.  Good luck!

  • I am approaching the same transition. I also bought the sleep suit. Tried it once for naps about a month ago but DS HATED it so went right back to swaddle... :)

Thinking of swaddling at least a couple more weeks (he is almost 5 months) and then just going cold turkey!

I don't think she can do cold turkey yet. I might have to wait until her startle reflex is a little less intense and wait until she can hold onto toys and give her a love. The swaddle is definitely an association and helps her with her reflex so that's where I know she needs it....but if MSS doesn't work then I guess that will be our only option. I'm holding onto dear life to this swaddle (she probabley has another 6 weeks at the least before it becomes a hazard for rolling) because she's a GLORIOUS night time sleeper.....

  • I thought it would be a nightmare, but cold turkey worked for us also.

  • We did cold turkey this weekend and it worked the best. Tried one arm out, and that was a disaster.
  • DD will be 6 months in two weeks and she is still swaddled. I'm going to try cold turkey. COMPLETELY dreading it.

  • We just started doing both arms out, she flailed for a few days but then got used to it. Well take the rest off soon a little scared for it tho
  • We started with one arm out for a few weeks, was pretty much the same, or no help at all. DD ended up more fustrated than she would have been completely swaddled. We went cold turkey today. Not bad so far, we'll see how it goes. She just turned 4 months.
  • I havne't really tried hard, but the time I did she had crazy arms and I just hate doing anything that will keep her up, so I swaddled again.  I do one arm out sometimes but she just lays there waving it around lol  I think she also still startles, so I'm going to wait until 5 mos or so.

yup, last week I could have written this exact post. LO Is 4.5 months and has been escaping her HALO sleepsack swaddle since 10 weeks. We've been double swaddling her using the "escape-proof swaddle" method of youtube fame...HAHA. it's horrible. literally a strait jacket but it completely works. LO is an excellent nighttime sleeper but only when she was swaddled. we knew it was time to stop when she started rolling but every time i had tried in the past it went horribly! so we started with 1 arm out and she woke up 4 times between 7 and 1:45 a.m. sometimes she put herself back to sleep, sometimes we had to go in there to soothe, but finally i reswaddled her at 1:45 so she could atleast get half a good night's sleep.but its never been that bad since. we've dont 1 arm out for about 7 nights now and tonight we have 2 arms out. we started slowly doing it for naps too. She woke up a few times the first 3 nights but its keeps getting better and better. they just get used to it...eventually her flailing arms just wont bother her i guess. good luck!

Same here. It's really funny to watch. He just flails the one arm around, hits himself in the face, etc. Except that he doesn't sleep! I guess by "cold turkey," you guys mean you just wait it out and eventually he'll fall asleep? I hate to cut into his good sleeping time, too, but I guess in the long run it's what we need to do...

  • Thanks for the input! I tried putting LO down without being swaddled but she DEFINITELY takes it as a cue and couldn't fall asleep.

I ordered the sleep suit and should get it tomorrow. I'm thinking of trying to get her down in it after a nice big bottle...when her eyes can barely stay open.  It's actually perfect timing because we just started going down for naps with minimal fuss In the swaddle. I'll probably try to keep up these really good naps and once she's going down with minimal/no fuss for a little we will try the sleep suit.....she's definitely trying to roll. she's been arching her back and trying to look behind her, and rolling to her side, so I think I need to get a jump start on for when she does

  • I caved and bought a Zipadee Zip. We've just started using it and results are mixed. I'll update in a few weeks for anyone interested. Hated spending $45 on a chance it might work! But it was designed exactly for the swaddling transition phase.
