It is a family name on both sides-both sides use a K. The ending is the difference. I like Katherine- I think it has the least occurrence of mis-spellings.

I only ask b/c I have 3 friends named Catherine (and all 3 go by Catie) and I guess I'm not used to seeing with a K.

I say Katherine, but I would pronounce both spellings the same.

On the same side of the family, I have an aunt Carolyn and a cousin Caroline, and Caroline is with a long I, as in "Sweeeeeet Caroliiiiiiiine"

Kathryn. It's actually a more common spelling than you might think. It was on my short list, but the hubby nixed it because he doesn't want a "Katie".
