Baby Names

Emma

I see this name at the top of every official name list but don't know any myself and didn't see it mentioned in the last 15 or so pages here and search sucks.

So my question is, is this name really that popular in your community, and is it popular for babies or more for 47 year olds and I'd be coming late to the party by using it? Thanks!

  • I think Emma is a beautiful name. Honestly, I only know 1 person named Emma and she's in her late 20's and from England. I know it's a popular name overseas but you're right, I never hear of anyone naming their kids Emma yet it's always on the popular names list. I think it's an excellent name!

  • I know a little Emma about a year old! It's a pretty, classic name. I would say it's more popular for babies than middle-aged women by far, but like many popular names these days, I only occasionally run across it.
  • Emma is very popular for children and babies right now. I have noticed quite a few around.

There are quite a few in my kids' school. I love the name but never considered it for a variety of reasons (popularity being one of them) I think it ranks #2 at my local hospital, and I definitely believe that statistic.

  • I know about 4 Emma's. Its pretty over used but if you like it use it.

  • If you do use it try to give her a more unique MN, especially if you have a common LN. Team if you love it, use it, just not with Rose or Grace as a MN (as pretty as they may be).

  • I teach quite a few Emma's, in secondary school.... Very nice name imho.
  • It's not super popular in our area, I guess. I do know of a few with the name Emma (both young and old!).

  • I don't know any Emma's either. The closest I've got is a cousin named Emelia and we call her Emmy. I think Emma is a very pretty name and if you love it, go for it.

DD is named Emma and although I love the name, it is really popular just about everywhere. DH and I are living in the UK and come across the name quite frequently.

I agree with other PPs- if you love the name, use it. I couldn't imagine DD with any of the other names we were tossing around.

  • I know Emma's of all ages by me... lots of em!   I think its pretty but would never use it because of that
  • Thanks very much for your responses. They didn't scare me too bad lol so I think I'll keep it on the list.

  • It is very popular. I feel like there is an Emma every time I turn around, I used to love this name but now I feel like it is so overdone. I have two little Emmas in my family, both my kids have Emmas in their preschool classes (there are two in my son's class) and there are a few in our neighborhood.

Where I live it is extremely popular. I know at least 5 people named Emma and they are all under the age of 4.

  • Yeah, I think it's a pretty name but it's very popular and I don't think it ages very well (though there are much worse "babyish" names).

  • I went to high school with an Emma (in the late 90s/early 00s) and I know one baby (9m old) named Emma. That's all.

If you love the name, use it. We named DD a name we loved, it just happened to be a popular one. Doesn't bother me.
