Need to vent--- dental visit!

OMG I swear I can't win lately.

We've had a rough year with DH's job--he's in the trades--so money is tighter than normal but we were still planning a small getaway this summer for us and the boys.  Well...... now I have at least $1200 in dental for DS1 that I have to unexpectedly pay.  I feel like our vacation money just got pulled out from under us

When DS1 was 2.5 yrs old I noticed small decay in his front teeth--took him in to the dentist to find out he had 12 cavities!!!!!  He had to be put under for them to work on him.  That was over $7K.

Went yesterday for his 6 month cleaning--which he did awesome at (they were even able to do x-rays!!!!  I was so proud).  BUT found out he has another 4 cavities that are between teeth.  WTH???!!!  I swear to you, we brush his teeth with (for) him every day--two times a day (sometimes 3).  I admit, we haven't been fantastic at flossing--but we've been trying.  AND we even brush ACT on his teeth with a brush about 1x a week.  I am in shock--and about to be broke...again.

  • I would get a 2nd opinion. Don't mention the cavities and take him to another pediatric dentist. I have heard of dentist that find all kinds of unnecessary "work" that needs to be done.

  • I would get a second opinion too.

A dentist DS had was very agressive with her treatment methods, wanting us to do cavity fills & a surgery at 1.5yo.  We declined.

I decided to go with another family dentist, and they were very patient with DS and want to build a relationship with him so he isn't scared of them...their cleaning/inspection was wonderful and he loved it.  Went home with stickers & dental gloves..they were a breathe of fresh air.

  • Ditto above re: second opinion. My sister was told recently that she needed over $1000 worth of work on her teeth- she sent her Xrays to another dentist who said she needed nothing done. I'm so sorry though, that sucks about your poor sons teeth! I've heard (and our dentist confirmed) that "good teeth" are genetic, and even with brushing cavities can exist. We aren't flossers either!
  • OMG! I am going to have nightmares over having a healthy mouth and not having a healthy mouth for DS and I!
