How to reject a day care provider *long ramble*

Let me start by saying I really do love my neighbor.

When I moved into my home I realized there was a home day care across the street.  My mind at the time said "How much easier could it get"  I always thought I would put LO there when the time came.  I told her after I had the baby that I would be placing him in her daycare when i was to return to work.  I recently decided (scattered mommy brain) that I should sh*t where I eat (I think that's how it goes).  I am worried that if something happens to LO in her care (falls, diaper rash, ect) I would become her enemy because I know as a FTM I would totally freak lol.  She also currently has 2 "4" year olds and 2 "1" year olds.  How can she manage my LO?  I don't want him in bed the whole time! Today I signed LO up at a daycare center that has amazing reviews from people I know and don't know.  How do I tell my neighbor I will not be placing LO there come July after I already told her I would?  I don't want her to think it's because I don't think she is good I just don't want to casue any drama with neighbors since I plan on sticking around for a few years longer.

Is the DC closer to your work? You could tell her you decided you want LO close by. But tell her sooner than later so you aren't holding up a spot.

  • I agree with the poster above.  Or, you could fib and say something like "my mom/aunt" has decided that she wants to watch the baby for free at her house.

Or you could always just tell her that you prefer a daycare center rather than in-home.

It's always a tricky situation when you have to reject someone

  • I would lie and say that a family member offered to watch my LO for free and they are really close to my work.  :)

I agree it is important to say something sooner rather than later but I would be cautious about what excuse you use depending on how close you are as neighbours and how small or large where you live is in case there is a chance you'd get caught in the lie. For that reason I'd be tempted to tell her you opted to go with a daycare rather than in home situation or to tell her if its closer to your work rather than saying a family member is watching her.

I agree with this. Don't lie about it. That makes it seem like you really don't trust her and didn't want to tell her.

Kaf is right on. Don't lie about who is watching LO. I wouldn't say anything about concern with her volume.  The 4 year-olds might go to preschool in the fall and she might ask you to pull LO out of the center (since she would have room).
