I'm not sure if this is the best board to post on, but am feeling really scared and overwhelmed about my 3 1/2 year old daughter being diagnosed with something called HSP--Hemoch Scholein Purpura. It's a vascular illness causing swelling in the blood vessels that can cause kidney damage. She is on steroids now, but was wondering if anyone else's child had ever had this. They say it could last 1-2 months or longer in some cases. She is in a lot of pain from joint swelling and itching like crazy covered in welt-like hives. It's so sad to see her like this. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Re: HSP diagnosis
Hi! I'm sorry about this diagnosis in your child, and while scary, you are treating it and that is a big factor.
I was diagnosed when I was 4. I had just started kindergarten and I went to get ready for bed and had another rash all over my legs. I was a rashy child, i had roseola often, scarlet fever, etc so it wasn't a huge deal. I went to the dr's the next day and he put my on steroids and basically said to just watch it and see what happened. I was also on tylenol and ibuprofen as needed.
However, a few days later I remember waking up with SEVERE abdominal pain. I can vividly remember laying on the floor curled up in a ball begging my parents to help. They rushed me to the ER and I had to get medication via IV. I was there for 5 days. They were worried about intussusception. I don't really remember exactly what had happened, but after the hospital stay I felt much better and was rash free. I did have some residual joint inflammation but returned to school.
I had a recurrence when I was about 10 but it was much milder and only lasted about a week and didn't need any intervention. They say the younger you have it the more likely you are to have it reoccur.
I also had this when I was a kid. First, I presented with out of control bleeding ulcers, and then the purpra. I was hospitalized for about 10 days (really due to the ulcers), and never had a recurrence. I do remember not being able to walk for a while.
Sorry your LO is going through this!
ETA: I turned 4 while I was sick with this. My mom also told me that 3 other kids got this at the same time as me so they brought all the parents in to see if there was a common thread. The only thing they all had in common is that all the moms liked to shop a Neiman Marcus. Too bad they could not figure out a way to pin it on Neimans!!
