Babies: 3 - 6 Months

First trip!

So we are going on our first road trip as a family since DD was born! I'm so excited/nervous at the same time! We are going from Cincinnati to St. Louis because my cousin is graduating from high school! (I feel so old about that) :)

Is there anything special I should bring for her/do for her etc? We will be making a few stops along he way to eat, change diapers, stretch legs and what not. I'm just I'm so afraid of forgetting something really important or doing something wrong!

Re: First trip!

  • We've only done a 2.5 hour trip with DD and she cried a lot. Her favorite thing was sucking on my thumb. GL!

  • I don't know how much room you have, but we practically packed up our house for DS's first big trip to Grandma's. It was four hours and we were staying three days. We brought his Bumpo, swing, PnP, a week's worth of clothes, his projector, our video monitor, the stroller. Basically everything that he liked or soothed him and made it as close to home as possible. Needless to say, the car was packed. I make a list when I have time to think clearly of everything I need for trips and keep it on the computer. I edit and add to the list as DS's needs change. Then the day of the trip, I open the list and double check that everything on it is in the car. Since that trip, DS has learned to put himself to sleep for naps, so thankfully we don't have to bring the swing anymore. It's the bulkiest thing to try to fit in the car!

Like PP said, DS isn't a fan of car rides for whatever reason, so it wasn't the most pleasant four hours of our lives. DH sat in the back with him and that definitely helped. Hopefully your LO likes car rides and will fare a bit better!

  • Yeah she loves being in the car! I think traveling two hours when she was only a few weeks old really helped! I have a bunch of stuff to make her feel at home and the pnp for the hotel, I'm just hoping I don't get there and think crap I forgot (most important thing) haha!

     Thanks for the input!

When I pack for DD or DS I go through our daily routine and make a list of all the things we use/need. My one suggestion is bring more diapers than you think you need. I ran out on the last day of a week long vacation and had to fly home with DD In her last overnight diaper praying that she didn't poop until we made it home!

  • we did a road trip recently, about a 6 hour drive, we made it in 7, two stops for meals and diaper change. we just took a TON of stuff. more clothes than we thought we'd ever use (hey their clothes are just little) becuase they go through about 3 outfits a day; tons of diapers, and their play mat. we did not take a stroller. we took their mobys. Stroller just took up too much room with the cooler for milk, my pumping gear, our bags, kids' bags, etc.
