Just wondering if anyone that had a VBAC has a birth plan they are willing to share. I know I want to try med-free but just curious what all I should include. I didn't make on for my first DD and I feel it had a lot to do with my section. Thanks in advance.
Re: VBAC birth plan
I have a birth plan, but it addresses my desires for a natural birth more than it has anything specific about VBACs.
there is a lot of research that points to less intervention (more natural) the better for VBACs. Standing/Being upright during contractions helps get the baby into good position and the head to open the cervix, etc, which isn't possible with an epidural.
Inductions, epidurals, etc just complicate things and end in C/S more often. But I'm sure while there are many successful epidural vbacs, but I just don't know how much you can try to control in that situation - it's just whether your baby is in a good position, or the size/shape of your pelvis. But maybe others know.
if you want to know many good Birth Plan points for a Natural birth - I can send you mine - let me know.
Good luck!
Like pp said, I have my plan for this time, but it's really more for the purpose of avoiding interventions than specific to VBAC. I don't have it in front of me, but I'll list what I can remember, which is pretty straightforward.
During labor:
dim room, door closed, quiet voices, positive presences, no unnecessary med staff
minimal cervical checks
fetal monitoring only as necessary
no IV; heplock okay
allow me to move freely, shower, tub, ball
no pitocin under any circumstances
do not break my water
do not ask me about pain
During birthing:
no coached pushing; allow me to use mother directed breathing to get baby to crown
use oils and hot compresses to avoid tearing
no episiotomy unless medically necessary and after discussion
allow baby to be fully birthed and placed on my chest before suctioning/rubbing
immediate skin to skin, delay cord clamping
delay measurements/eye stuff/vitamin k for at least an hour
allow fifteen minutes for natural placenta delivery; no traction or pitocin unless medically necessary
FWIW, I am also trying med free, because something about the interventions last time caused my labor to stall badly. I'm intent on avoiding interventions altogether and the only VBAC specific things I have to 'fight' for are the absence of continuous fetal monitoring and not doing immediate hospital admittance. My OB wants me to go to the hospital fairly early, and I don't plan to. I plan to stay at home for a while; I went in last time after 8 hours and was only at 2cm. I want to be at least halfway dilated this time. Regarding monitoring, OB wants it continuously once I'm in "active labor" and I plan to decline this if I want to move. Maybe I'll be fine in the bed once I get to the hospital, but if I'm not and I want to walk or get in the tub, I'm going to ask that the monitoring be stopped so I can do so. A nurse can check me with a Doppler intermittently if need be.
Good luck to you!
This is so helpful, thank you! I am also planning to delay going to the hospital - I got there at 2cm last time and was there for way too long and way too many checks/interventions. Thank you again. I hope you get your VBAC! You are so close!
Yes, that makes sense. I suppose I worded this question wrong. While I am really hoping to have a VBAC I am definitely nervous as I had a bit of scare with my daughter, 20 hours of labor, 2+ hours of pushing, c/s then she was born with e.coli sepsis and there were warning signs. I had a high fever, meconium in my fluid, etc. I guess I'm just wondering if it is a good idea to say, If I develop a fever I'd like to be given the option to have a c/s immediately, or if that is just too defeatist. I think if I develop a fever or have meconium again I am going to mentally freak out, so I guess preparing myself for this is my best bet. I am starting to get a little scared that I will have the same traumatic birth again. I really don't want another section but I also *really* want a healthy baby.
