BFing moms- Vitamin D supplement??

My Dr. recommended my DD to take a vitamin D supplement. Is this necessary? I see mixed reactions on other boards. I drink alot of milk, and take my prenatal vitamin.

thanks!

  • Our LO takes D. We live in the North though and don't get tons of sun so Dr. recommended because everyone around here is vitamin D deficient.

My pedi said we would wait and see how she was at 2 mths. As long as baby is exposed to some sun for short periods of time that can get they vit d that way. But if you need to several moms I know use Carlsons... they have no taste and babies take them better.

Yea, I'm reading up on carlsons. My pedi recommended d-vit-sol by enfamil... and i'm reading reviews on amazon and it sounds horrible. Carlsons sounds like you just put a drop on the breast or paci and your good.

  • DD has been out a few times since she's been home (dr. recommended some sun because she had a little bit of jaundice). We live in PA, so we get quite a bit of sun in the summer.

Our hospital pedi insisted on it. I'm waiting to discuss with our actual pedi, who we see tomorrow for the first time. I take prenatals, we live in California and walk outside most days, and if he does need it, I don't want it to be that Poly-Vi-Sol they prescribed either.

Carlsons is THE BEST in my opinion.  That being said, we are out and about quite a bit and I'm not sure supplementation is necessary at this time.  With my first, it was the dead of winter so I supplemented.

  • Our didn't mention this at all.. We are in Florida and get quite a bit of sun when we leave the house at all.. Except today if course! I'll be interested to see if they mention it at LOs 2 mo appt.

My pedi prescribed the poly vi sol....I haven't given them to her yet...but what's wrong with them?
  • I was told that bf babies usually are vitamin D deficient. I live in WI and everyone here is vitamin D deficient. Annabelle gets vit D once a day.

I just don't like that they said he needed vitamin D, then prescribed a general multi vitamin. I'd really like to stick to as close to breast milk as we can, so if it's Vit D he needs, I'd rather just do that.
  • The problem is that Vitamin D does not transfer in breast milk....so even if you get enough or take vitamins it doesn't matter.

I live in NC and my ped said she only needs 10 minutes of sunlight before 10am to get all she needs.  She said it's more of a concern for winter babies.

  • I add D-Vi-Sol to my bottled breast milk. It wasn't prescribed by the pedi, but it came with the free sample of Enfamil they gave us. So with the docs approval, we began to give it to DS.

  • Yes. My pedi had us start him on tri vi sol. He said we could so D vi sol instead if we just wanted vit D. But I didn't see a problem. What's wrong with it?

Poly vi sol is a multi vitamin and contains a ton of additives and preservatives. Carlsons Vitamin D is colorless, tasteless, and only Vitamin D. It seems expensive but you only use one drop at a time. With PVS, you have to give the baby a significant amount of product and go through bottles quickly.

ETA: Check the ingredients and decide for yourself.
  • I was told to stay on my prenatal and also take a vitamin D supplement as we live in a area that doesn't have much sun all the time, and baby needed vitamin D drops. I don't see how it can hurt.

  • We started Carlson's tonight, it took me a while to finally make it to Whole Foods to pick it up. We put a drop in the pumped bottle that my husband gives him, but the pediatrician said that I could also put a drop on my nipple when I breast feed him.

The drops are so small...  you can even wait for them to open their mouths and just drop it in.  :)

  • We are doing the Carlsons as well and LO takes it completely fine.
