Babies: 6 - 9 Months

MOTN eating habit

I cannot leave LO's room in the MOTN without feeding him. He is FF. He was sleeping through the night a few nights a week up until this week. He has a tooth cutting this week and is waking about once a night. He just seems starving when he wakes at night. But he eats about 32 ounces a day without this feeding so he is eating enough during the day. And roughly 40 ounces with his MOTN feeding. Yikes! I tend to think it isn't a habit because he can and does STTN sometimes. I also am not sure if I believe that it can be a habit. I mean, if he's hungry, who am I to decide he is fine and doesn't need to eat?! Anyone else go through this? Most mom friends of mine say that I shouldn't expect him to STTN until between now and 9 months...

Re: MOTN eating habit

  • My LO does this also. He has never gone a night without a feeding. He goes down at 8 after a bottle and the longest he has gone without one is until 6:10 am, but will then fall back asleep for about half an hour before he is up for the day. When we wakes in the MOTN, I try giving him his pacifier first but if he is hungry he spits it out so I feed him.

  • My LO is 6.5 months and has NEVER STTN but occasionally he will only wake at 330 and yes its always for food. I am like you, I have a hard time denying him since he normally eats every two hours during the day so if he is hungry after 7 hours I can understand why.
  • FYI there is a growth spurt at 6 months and some say its the biggest they've seen - ours went on for almost 3 weeks.

    I think between now and 9 months is a legit time frame to start STTN but you never know. I didn't question what I needed to do in the night when DS woke up, I just fed him. He wasn't happy with anything else and he would down 6oz so I kept doing it until he stopped waking for it. Some nights he wouldn't wake andnbsp;others he would. I just went to bed at night knowing I might have to get up and prepared myself fornbsp;that!
    I wish there was some textbook answer for this problem but kids change so much and arenbsp;all so different so you really just have to try different things to see what works :nbsp;

    True. It doesn't bother me. I really can't complain about one wakeup at night. But my pedi kept emphasizing that he doesn't need this MOTN feeding so I began to question it. I just can't imagine not feeding him. I haven't bf in 2 months and he tries to bf every time. So I know he's a hungry guy.

    If he can and does STTN but wakes up sometimes to eat, then he's legit still hungry on those nights, IMO. I'd feed him when he's hungry still. Sure, it would be nice for your pedi to be right and for there to be a magical cut off age where all babies don't need MOTN feedings anymore, but that's obviously not reality.

    Mabenner have you been "gold" for while or is that new??

    Beats me! I think gold is 5,000 posts, but not positive. :)
